Milan Fashion Week: Day Three

Marie Claire Fashion: Milan Fashion Week, D&G

With 'a statement of modern elegance and womanly grace', Jil Sander brought day three of Milan fashion week to a close yesterday evening.

The show was a textbook example of high fashion simplicity. Funnel neck winter coats with origami style collars looked effortless thanks to exquisite cuts. These coats along with heavy woollen evening dresses and zip-up day dresses were paraded down the catwalk on vertiginous heels, creating the perfect working wardrobe for the modern woman.

Things were less senior board meeting, more walk in the park at Burberry Prorsum, where Christopher Bailey was on classic form.

Heavy winter coats, with fingerless gloves and knitted beanies kept out the chill, while fabulous statement piece necklaces kept up the glamour. Once the overcoats had been shed, touchably-soft feathered cocktail dresses made a play for the limelight, while the finale extraordinaire saw models Lily Donaldson, Agyness Deyn and Daisy Lowe walk down the catwalk under a flurry of autumn leaves.

The only thing missing from D&G's Scottish celebration earlier in the day was a plate full of shortbread and a posy of thistles. Everything else from tartan and plaid through to Argyll knits and kilts were there in abundance.

The mood at Alberta Ferretti was more ethereal, with purples, greens and blues shading a calming palette, which coloured trapeze-style pintuck dresses, large opera coats and beautiful dresses, for which the designer is famed.

Similar shades helped shape Clare Waight Keller's Pringle of Scotland collection. While the models themselves looked severe, with scraped back hair and moody pouts, the clothes were more accessible: Straight-legged trousers, textured knitted dresses, sheer blouses and a particularly beautiful floor length pleated evening gown.

At Giorgio Armani, things were alittle glitzier, with plenty of sparkle on chintzy shawls and flowery prints.

Dresses, shirts and coats, may have looked comparatively plain as they progressed down the catwalk at Gianfranco Ferré, but as they retreated, cutaway backs, huge bows and other design tricks were revealed.

If you like making an entrance, then choose Armani or Ferretti, or if it's a stylish exit you are after next season, it has to be Ferré.
