Ethical fashion at London Fashion Week

Marie Claire Fashion news: Ethical Fashion at London Fashion Week

Ethical fashion took centre stage at London Fashion Week yesterday with shows from The House of Tammam and Wildlife Works UK.

Alongside big names like Betty Jackson, Basso & Brooke and Aquascutum, Wildlife Works UK took its slot on the On|Off schedule, while Lucy Tammam, the designer behind The House of Tammam, chose to showcase her new collection on a moving catwalk, with models using bikes (see our picture) and the Tube to get around London and show off their wares.

With fans including Laura Bailey, Lucy Tammam is definitely one to watch. A Central Saint Martins graduate, she uses organic and natural fabrics and dyes to create her collections, and puts 10% off all profits straight back into community projects in the countries where her clothes are made.

Wildlife Works UK, meanwhile, creates its fashion on an 80,000 acre eco-sanctuary in Kenya, which was originally set up as a wildlife sanctuary to prevent the loss of important, rare and valuable species.

'Clothing was not originally part of our plan,' founder Mike Korchinsky explains. 'Though the sanctuary was started purely to stop poaching – we look after 47 mamamals and five endangered species – it taught us the value of providing a sustainable income to the local community and engaging them in the process.'

Fabulous!! Ethical fashion in the mainstream... gorgeous clothes too. Who says you can't look fabulous and care?

I love the clothes from Tammam - they're gorgeous - and I love the bike idea. It's so nice to see some truly original voices in fashion.
