BFC criticised by eating disorder campaigners

Fashion model

The British Fashion Council has faced further criticism from campaigners, claiming that it has not done enough to stop size zero models from being featured on the capital's catwalks.

With London Fashion Week due to start on 10 February, campaigners claim that not enough of the measures outlined in the Model Health Inquiry (MHI) have been implemented. Of fourteen recommendations, just four have been properly instigated, leading campaigners to accuse the industry of not being committed to putting a stop to eating disorders amongst models.

Susan Ringwood, chief executive of eating disorder charity Beat told The Independent this weekend, 'We want the fashion industry to put its words into action, to just get on with it. But there has been little evidence so far of any direct action.'

Eating disorder specialist Dr Adrienne Key sat on the board of the MHI and added, 'There are definite sections of the industry that continue to promote unhealthy body images - androgynous underweight appearances. This is at the cost of the health of some of the models concerned.'

The BFC insist though that changes are being made. February's fashion week will see a ban on any models under the age of sixteen, and increased monitoring of models, which will include promotion of a healthier environment, with increased areas available to take time out and a zero tolerance policy on all drugs.

If someone is healthy but skinny, that's one thing. Some are born that way, and can still look good! But if someone is abusing drugs, laxatives, making themselves sick or whatever then it ought to be - sorry ****** but we cannot employ you while you are doing this. Sadly, while so many of the designers collude in EDs and wish the young vulnerable models in their employ to be as slim as possible, this just isn't going to happen any time soon.
