Coco Chanel

A dancefloor on which Marlene Dietrich strutted her stuff and a bed in which Coco Chanel slept are among the nostalgic treasures to be auctioned off by The Savoy.

The hotel, which has been a landmark on The Strand in London for decades, is making way for a £100 million restoration by selling off more than 3,000 pieces of furniture, fixtures and fittings.

The three-day auction begins today and the hotel’s associations with the rich and famous are expected to attract thousands of potential buyers.

Particularly popular is the French painted and gilt double bed from room 412, whose guests over the years included the fashion doyenne Chanel, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. It is expected to fetch a conservative £1,500.

Also among the lots are a white piano at which Frank Sinatra crooned away long drunken nights, the parquet oak dancefloor from the ballroom on which everyone who is anyone has appeared and the contents of the Monet suite, in which Charlie Chaplin stayed with his family in the 1950s.
