Topshop launches New York store
Topshop is to open a brand new store in New York, reflecting the growing international profile of the British high street legend.
The store beloved of teenage girls and fashionistas alike is to open a 40,000 sq ft shop in Manhattan next September - at a cost of between £9m and £12m.
Sir Philip Green, the British billionaire who owns Arcadia - the retail group that runs Topshop - told The Guardian: 'I've been thinking about doing this for about 18 months. We have to prove that this is a brand that can travel.'
Assisting Green in his American endeavour is none other than Kate Moss, who has been designing small collection for the brand since May 2007 and is contracted until May 2009.
The chain's collaboration with the supermodel has already raised the profile of the Topshop brand in the US.
Her range was stocked in the upmarket New York department store Barneys and although reviews were mixed, the clothes featured in US fashion magazines and Barneys described them as 'a hit'.
'I am not under any illusion that we don't have work to do there,' said Green. 'But we're known in fashion circles and the American fashion press has been coming to the store in Oxford Street for years so we're not starting cold.'
