Stella named designer of the year
STELLA MCCARTNEY WAS named designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards last night.
The award comes weeks after McCartney?s seven-year-old label announced it had made a small profit for the first time - and proves her graduation to respected designer.
Her signature look, which mixes sportswear influences with tailoring and vintage-style fabrics, has become established in the fashion world and spawned a raft of imitations, including the pale, silky parkers to be offered by Marks & Spencer next summer.
McCartney's launch of the Stella perfume and her move into sunglasses and a range of sports clothing for Adidas helped to balance the books. Her label is to launch a range of lingerie a few months after the birth of her third child.
Other winners at the awards last night included Anya Hindmarch, who received the designer brand of the year award, while Marchesa, designed by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, got the red carpet designer of the year.
Christopher Kane was awarded new designer of the year just 18 months after graduating from Central St Martins, and the fashion editor Isabella Blow, who died in April, was remembered with the Isabella Blow award for fashion creator, which was given to production designer Michael Howells.
Dame Vivienne Westwood won the award for outstanding achievement in fashion.
