Marilyn Monroe dresses go on display
By Marilyn Monroe's infamous white halter neck dress will go on display from today on Tuesday 2 October 2007
FOR THE FIRST time in over 40 years, a selection of Marilyn Monroe's most iconic dresses will go on display today in Brighton. The collection from legendary Hollywood costume designer William Travilla includes the billowing white dress that Marilyn wore in The Seven Year Itch.
Other gowns on display will include the pink strapless dress worn in Gentlemen Prefer Blonds, in which Marilyn famously sang Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, and also a red sequinned number from the same film.
The collection had remained in Travilla's private archive, which the designer was incredibly protective of. He became great friends with Monroe whilst working with her, and following her death vowed to protect her memory by keeping the dresses from prying eyes.
Travilla died in 1990, and the estate passed onto his partner Bill Sallis. Sallis has chosen to stage the exhibition as a celebration of the life of two screen icons, with all funds raised going to the Alzheimer's Society.
The exhibition will run until Sunday, and is taking place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole hotel.
