Aboriginal calendar celebrates native women's beauty
A SWIMWEAR CALENDAR of Aborginal women has been launched to promote indigenous models.
Former Olympic athlete, Nova Peris, produced the calendar hoping it will boost the confidence of Aboriginal women.
'We want to say [to indigenous girls]: 'Get out there and be proud,' said Ms Peris who won a gold medal in hockey at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The image of indigenous women has been enhanced by the rise of a 17-year-old schoolgirl model, Samantha Harris, who has been tipped to be the first Aboriginal supermodel.
Harris was spotted by a model agency three years ago after getting to the finals of a competition with teen magazine Girlfriend. Since then Harris has modelled for David Jones, Australia's answer to Selfridges, Lancôme and US Glamour magazine.
The calendar has been shot by one of Australia's few indigenous professional photographers, Wayne Quilliam, who told The Australian newspaper: 'I believe the beauty of Aboriginal women is the essence of Australia – strong, proud and unique.'
Samantha who has an Aboriginal mother and German father said: 'I'm really proud of my Aboriginal heritage. I want to do well for my culture and for my family.'
