Aboriginal calendar celebrates native women's beauty

Marie Claire fashion news: Samantha Harris Aboriginal Supermodel

A SWIMWEAR CALENDAR of Aborginal women has been launched to promote indigenous models.

Former Olympic athlete, Nova Peris, produced the calendar hoping it will boost the confidence of Aboriginal women.

'We want to say [to indigenous girls]: 'Get out there and be proud,' said Ms Peris who won a gold medal in hockey at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The image of indigenous women has been enhanced by the rise of a 17-year-old schoolgirl model, Samantha Harris, who has been tipped to be the first Aboriginal supermodel.

Harris was spotted by a model agency three years ago after getting to the finals of a competition with teen magazine Girlfriend. Since then Harris has modelled for David Jones, Australia's answer to Selfridges, Lancôme and US Glamour magazine.

The calendar has been shot by one of Australia's few indigenous professional photographers, Wayne Quilliam, who told The Australian newspaper: 'I believe the beauty of Aboriginal women is the essence of Australia – strong, proud and unique.'

Samantha who has an Aboriginal mother and German father said: 'I'm really proud of my Aboriginal heritage. I want to do well for my culture and for my family.'

None of these women are full aborigine. Model agencies focus on girls with more European features. They like the exotic look of a woman with mixed heritage. I guess that works. But I think it would be cool to make a calendar with full blood aborigine women.

Aboriginal women come in all shapes and sizes. But I do agree, the focus for main media is on european features with a *hint* of aboriginal ancestry. It would be great to see some variation. The main thing is that *all* aboriginal women appreciate their own beauty.

shut up u's are all just jealous, modelling agencies need to focus MORE on aboriginal woman beacause there is a lot more of them that would get up there and model!

Firstly everyone needs to begin with a capital 'A' for Aboriginal and secondly the process of colonisation may have changed some features...but never denounced Aboriginality. Aboriginality is identity...not merely heritage. Samantha Harris has and always will be Aboriginal and we think she's deadly.
