Sarah Jessica Parker wears £4.50 high-street dress to premiere

Sarah Jessica Parker may be best known for her love of designer wares, but for a NY premiere last week she shunned a high price frock, and instead wore a dress from the US equivalent of Primark.

The pretty leaf print sundress costs just £4.50, and is part of SJP's Bitten fashion line at cut-price retailer Steve & Barry.

With all prices in store under $9 (£4.50), the prices are even cheaper than the UK's bargain clothing market.

But the shop vows that it does not use sweatshops, and instead keeps prices down by spending no money on advertising, opening stores in cheap areas, and keeping profits very small on all products.

Speaking to the New York Times at last week's premiere, the Sex and the City star explained why she chose the high-street, rather than high-end market, in which to design her own line.

'It seems like there is some justice in that, doesn’t it? For a lot of people - young women, middle-age women, regular women - there is this idea about wanting fashion in an affordable way. They are living in a less rarefied world.'
