Forget the thousand-room chain hotels in Times Square. To make your New York trip a bit more intimate and lot more stylish, book a room at one of the city's more refined boutique hotels. From impeccably designed lobbies and bars to sleek and welcoming rooms, the decor at these three picks is sure to impress.

The Viceroy Situated in Midtown, this luxury hotel's location may seem touristy but its interior certainly is not. Designers Roman & Williams - the husband-wife team behind New York's Royalton, Ace and Standard hotels - drew inspiration from film noir, the stylish crime dramas of the 1940s. Natalie Marchbanks, interiors blogger behind BlockPrintSocial.com, lists it among her favourite NYC finds. "It conjures up an older, romanticised Manhattan - bold, intense, and aspirational," she says. "Undeniably glamorous, your inner Jay Gatsby will feel right at home amidst the lobby's high-impact marble and bronze."

The NoMad Hotel

The NoMad This chic hotel moves you away from Times Square and closer to Madison Square Park, as well as some of the city's trendiest bars and restaurants. "An elegant pastiche of New York and Paris sensibilities, the NoMad has won my heart completely," says Natalie. "The public spaces are marked by a dose of Old World opulence, and the rooms are fresh and calming, without being a bore. If nothing else, stay for the claw-foot tubs - a perfect reprieve from the bustling streets below."

Wythe Hotel This Brooklyn gem is a converted old factory building on the Williamsburg waterfront. Outside of Manhattan, it's Natalie's favourite place to stay. "Its industrial bones have been given fresh life with polished finishes and the most mesmerising bespoke wallpaper by local illustrator Dan Funderburgh," she says. "Opt for a western-facing room for jaw-dropping views of the Manhattan skyline, somehow handsomer when viewed through the Wythe's steel frame floor-to-ceiling windows."
