Overdue a phone upgrade? You’re in luck, because Apple is about to announce a brand new iPhone.

It’s fair to say that the Apple iPhone is starting to look a little tired. The design hasn’t changed much in recent years, and it’s hard to tell the difference between an iPhone from 2014 and 2016 – at a glance, anyway.

That sucks when you’re having to spend a few extra hundred pounds for the latest model, right?

Rival phone makers have upped their design game too. Just look at the Samsung Galaxy S8, with its huge display and gorgeous curved sides. Put it alongside an iPhone 7 and Apple’s phone looks like a relic.

But fear not, iPhone addicts: Apple could retake the smartphone style crown very soon with the launch of the iPhone 8 and the rumoured iPhone X.

Today, Apple confirmed a major product launch event for Tuesday, September 12, which is set to take place in the company’s stylish new Apple Park campus – yep, the one that looks like a spaceship:

The iPhone 8 release date will probably be announced at this event, and it’s going to be a really big deal.

It was 10 years ago when Apple first launched the original iPhone, so the Californian tech giant is definitely hoping to make a splash with its next phone to celebrate the anniversary.

According to the latest industry rumours, the iPhone 8 will feature a completely redesigned body with an “all-screen front”. That means almost all of the front of the phone will be occupied by the display – say goodbye to those ugly black bars that currently border your iPhone screen.

Tech tipsters also suggest we’ll see a new OLED display featuring on the phone. That doesn’t sound particularly exciting, but it means the new iPhone screen should be able to show more colourful visuals and produce a brighter picture. Your Netflix binge sessions are about to get a major upgrade, basically.

Even better, Apple is supposedly adding a new 3D facial recognition system with the iPhone 8. The main use for this is probably going to be for unlocking your phone using your face – arrival of creepy sci-fi future, confirmed.

But it also means your phone camera will be able to sense depth better, making it possible to vastly improve Snapchat-style filters that modify your face. Basically, selfies could look better than ever on the new iPhone, all thanks to a bit of photographic trickery.

Here’s a glimpse of what the iPhone 8 might look like, courtesy of a famous tech vlogger:

The bad news is that the new iPhone is probably going to be really expensive. Samsung’s latest smartphones – the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 – costed £689 and £869 at launch, respectively. So Apple is almost certain to tag its new anniversary edition smartphone with a similar price. That’s bad news, as last year’s iPhone started at a much more manageable £599. Fingers crossed, our sister site Trusted Reviews knocks it out of the park with their Black Friday UK edit of the best tech deals and wrangles us a good price on the iPhone 8...

In any case, we’ve got a bit of time before the new iPhone is announced, so start scouring the back of the sofa for those long lost pennies. New smartphones don’t come cheap.
