You’ll Never Believe What Net-A-Porter Was Going To Be Called… (Thank God It Never Happened)

Net-A-Porter could have had a very different name. Thank the fashion gods this one didn't stick…

What’s in a name? A lot. Just ask the founder and CEO of Net-A-Porter, Natalie Massenet. She originally wanted to call her billion pound empire What’s New Pussy Cat?

Who knew Natalie was a Tom Jones fan?

‘My lawyer said I couldn’t call it What’s New, Pussycat? for legal reasons, so I had to find a new name. I took my WWD dictionary and went from A to P: prêt-à-porter. Net-a-Porter,’ she told 032c.

And that change was Natalie’s first step in transforming a humble e-commerce business, which she ran out of her Chelsea flat, into a household name.

‘The name meant a lot. I couldn’t sell my friends’ Pashmina scarves anymore. It had to be the real stuff. It had to be prêt-à-porter,’ she explained.

We like the way you think, Natalie.
