The First Lady chose the ruby red dress to attend husband Barack Obama's second inauguration ball as US president in Washington

She put young designer Jason Wu firmly on the fashion map when she wore one of his creations to husband Barack Obama's first inauguration ball as president in 2009, and last night Michelle Obama turned to him once more for the second inauguration gala.

The American First Lady wowed in a fiery red halter neck gown, which was custom-made by Wu, as she joined her husband in Washington D.C for the prestigious ceremony. She accessorised her woven faille coupé gown, which also featured a white gold ring with pavé diamonds by jeweller Kimberly McDonald at the collarbone, with a pair of matching kitten heels by Jimmy Choo.

'Like last time, I had to go with my gut,' Wu told WWD. 'I instinctively had to think of the woman in the dress. After four years in office, I thought the country was ready to see a confident First Lady in red. It just felt right.'

MICHELLE OBAMA: STYLE RETROSPECTIVE

The stunning look was the latest in a string of style hits Obama pulled off over the weekend of inaugural festivities. Earlier in the day, she kicked off the inaugural proceedings by attending Washington's St John's Church for a prayer service before heading to her husband's swearing-in ceremony outside Capitol Hill wearing a check patterned silk dress coat by another New York-based designer, Thom Browne. This time she accessorised with a bejewelled belt and purple leather gloves, both by J. Crew, and blue knee-high suede boots by Reed Krakoff.

On Sunday, Michelle attended her husband's official swearing-in ceremony at the White House wearing a midnight blue abstract wash print shift dress and a matching cashmere cardigan by Reed Krakoff and black kitten heels by Jimmy Choo, while in the evening she switched to a glamorous black sequined cocktail dress by Michael Kors to attend a reception at the city's National Building Museum.

Rounding things off, the First Lady chose a white Alexander McQueen shirt, black tailored trousers and a yellow belt to attend the 2013 Kids’ Inaugural Concert with daughters Malia and Sasha on Saturday evening.
