Get the royal prinny look

Words by Anna Clarke

If, like us, you’re already feeling a bit forlorn now that the Royal Wedding has been and gone, you can take comfort in the fact that at least you can dress like a Duchess, as Meghan Markle’s popular ripped jeans from brand Mother are now being stocked in the UK for the very first time.

Fans desperate for a bit of that Markle sparkle will be pleased to know that the brand has re-released the style and they are now available to buy at Selfridges! Yaaaaas. The newly titled Duchess of Sussex was pictured in the Looker Love Gun jeans as the couple made their first public appearance together at the Invictus Games in Toronto last September.

This outing was also the first indication that Meghan was a girl after our own hearts when she stepped out in the low key, distinctively unroyal ensemble — a super casual pair of skinny ripped jeans by cult Los Angeles-based label Mother Denim and tan flats. No court shoes in sight yet, guys.

The former Suits actress probably didn't suspect then that the ‘Meghan Markle effect’ was about to enthral the retail world and thousands of women’s wardrobe choices. Such was the demand for the cropped jeans that the number of Google searches for the brand rose 60% that week and a massive spike in sales the following month.

‘The day after Meghan wore our jeans, we saw nearly a 200 percent increase in traffic. More people came to our website that day than they did on Black Friday,’ the brand's president and co-founder Lela Becker told The Telegraph.

This is the kind of PR that most brands can only dream of. And it’s not just Mother that has enjoyed the Royal wave of approval, many of the other labels that she’s been pictured wearing have sold out almost instantly. Lyst, the fashion search engine, recognising a sure influencer on the rise placed Meghan in fourth as one of the most influential style stars last year, one in front of the Duchess of Cambridge.

And this stately sell-out effect is showing no sign of slowing yet. The British brand Goat’s website crashed last week after the newly-wed Meghan wore their dusky pink Flavia dress to her father-in-law, Prince Charles' 70th birthday party.

Similarly, another fashion frenzy happened when the Duchess carried a wine-coloured bag by Strathberry, to her very first official outing with Prince Harry in Nottingham. The super chic accessory sold out in under 11 minutes.

So if you wanna ensure you nab a sprinkling of the royal touch, don’t sleep on that net order people!
