EXCLUSIVE: Mario Testino’s Instagram Tips

The iconic photographer exclusively reveals his social media tips and the page at the top of his 'follow' list...

For the ultimate insider look at the most exclusive parties, shoots and stars, Mario Testino is the man to follow on Instagram. But the account of one of the world’s most iconic and legendary photographers isn’t all about the stars in front of the camera – although we do love his personal shots of Angelina Jolie, and the on-going black and white towel series – it’s Testino’s ability to take a brilliant snap with just his phone camera that really deserves a follow.

So how does he suggest we achieve such beautiful snaps? Put simply, the key is to edit. Speaking exclusively to Marie Claire, Testino explained: ‘Since I have been on Instagram one is bombarded by images and it forces you to really assess what is good and what is not. My tips would be to edit and really look and question what is a good picture or not.

I love Instagram, it’s almost like my own magazine, in a way. It’s great too to have that immediate engagement with people – the world is moving at such a fast pace and I can take a picture and post it immediately and get instant feedback. I have seen many developments in the industry, from the days when we photographed on film not knowing what the picture would be like until we got the contact sheet back from the lab a week later.’

And while we here at Marie Claire follow thousands of taste-makers on the social media app, who does he – the man who counts Kate Moss and Gisele as muses – follow?

‘I would pick just one, because at the moment I love seeing what is posted to the National Geographic’s stream. Such incredible pictures, so fascinating and enlightening. They show the beauty of the world and it’s so inspiring to see.’

So there you have it. Edit. And tap ‘follow’ on the National Geographic page…
