In case you missed it

After blasting us all into space at Paris Fashion Week, Chanel decided to take us back in time last night for its ‘La Modernité de l’Antiquité’ themed Cruise 2018 Collection, inspired by ancient Greece.

In case you missed out on the action (or weren't looking at our Instagram feed last night), here are five key facts you need to know about.

1. Karl took us back in time

The Chanel AW17 Paris Fashion Week show may have looked to the future with its space theme, but this one was all about the past. The Grand Palais in Paris was transformed into Ancient Greece for the occasion, and rockets were replaced by temple ruins instead, being inspired by the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon.

2. Coco Chanel was actually fascinated by the period

The designer even designed the costumes for Jean Cocteau’s production of Antigone in the 1920s. In case you were wondering what Chanel would look like in Ancient Greece.

3. The Chanel muses were out in force

From Keira Knightley to Laura Bailey, Isabelle Hupert and Caroline de Maigret, the front row was packed with stylish guests, all decked in Chanel, naturellement.

4. It was all about the accessories

While the impressive resort wear included cinched waists, gilded tweed and toga-inspired dresses, our eye couldn’t help but be drawn to the selection of statement accessories. For summer 2018, there’s no doubt about it, it’s all about elevating your look with hero pieces such as gold headbands and jewel belts.

5. Lace-up sandals are the investment piece you need

Shimmering accessories aside, it was all about the lace up gladiator sandals. Models paraded down the catwalk in chic knee-high lace-ups in bold colours, with heels shaped like Ionic columns - a smart nod to the theme of the evening.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
