Kate Middleton And Prince William Pick Unlikely Godparents For Prince George
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have once again broken with royal tradition by choosing their school and university friends to be Prince George’s godparents.
Rather than selecting family members or fellow royals, Kate and William are reportedly asking friends out of the public eye to give their son a sense of normality as he grows up, The Sunday Times has revealed.
Prince William’s schoolfriend Fergus Boyd, a financier who went to Eton with the Duke and shared a house with the couple at St Andrew’s University, is said to have been chosen as one of George’s six godparents.
Hugh Van Cutsem, one of Will’s oldest friends whose daughter Grace was flower girl at the royal wedding and who William is already a godparent to, is also said to be a contender, along with Kate’s Marlborough college schoolfriend, interior designer Emilia d’Erlanger.
The couple's decision to choose friends from school is a world away from the godparents chosen for William, most of whom had royal connections. They included Constantine II, the former King of Greece, and Princess Alexandra, a cousin of the Queen.
A royal source told the newspaper: ‘They are rather unexpected off-the-wall choices for godparents – not the usual suspects of William’s closest friends who we anticipated.’
Kate and William have already shunned royal tradition by opting to hold little Georgie’s christening at the Chapel Royal in St James’s Palace rather than Buckingham Palace’s music room where Prince William, Prince Charles and the Queen were all baptised.
The intimate ceremony's 60-strong guestlist will be restricted to close family only, with Prince William's uncles Prince Edward and Prince Andrew and Princess Anne reportedly not due to attend the October 23 event.
