Charlie Hunnam Struggled With Fifty Shades Of Grey Role, Says Scriptwriter

by Rebecca Martin

Charlie Hunnam didn't immediately accept the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Of Grey, despite it being the most talked-about movie in Hollywood.

While plenty of US actors have allegedly turned down the role in the adaptation, due for release in August 2014, Charlie was almost one of them, according to his Sons Of Anarchy writer and creator, Kurt Sutter.

Talking about the moment Charlie discussed the role with him, Kurt told US magazine, Vulture: 'We had a couple long creative conversations about what the role was, what it meant. He struggled with it because obviously there's a lot of noise around that role.'

Fifty Shades Of Grey
author E L James announced that Charlie would be portraying the S&M-obsessed CEO Christian Grey alongside Dakota Johnson on her Twitter feed in September.

Kurt added: 'There's a lot of predetermined expectations. At the end of the day, and my advice to him was: "Look at the material. Don't look at the history. Don't look at where it potentially could be going. Look at the material and look at the people you're working with. If it makes sense, then move forward."

'I think that's what he did. It was a very thoughtful process, I think based on all the right decisions. It was not about notoriety. It was not about money. So I think it's cool, man.'

Fifty Shades Of Grey
producers praised Charlie and Dakota's chemistry from their very first audition. It's not known how X-rated the film's producers plan to make the movie, but one thing's for sure, there's no backing out now, Charlie...
