Katy Perry joins the likes of Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson by raising her voice and using her influence to make a difference.

If there's one thing stars love doing more than shooting movies and making sell out records, it's a little bit of charity work.

Katy Perry is the latest figure using her celebrity status to help others by visiting one of the poorest countries in the world, Madagascar, with UNICEF in view of bringing attention to the situation of children in the country.

Fresh off the back of her split from John Mayer, Katy flew into the African country, visiting a child protection centre where she met abused and abandoned children and young mothers.

JOHN MAYER CONFIRMS KATY PERRY SPLIT

Perry said: 'In less than one week here in Madagascar, I went from crowded city slums to the most remote villages, and my eyes were widely opened by the incredible need for a healthy life - nutrition, sanitation, and protection against rape and abuse - which UNICEF are stepping in to help provide.

'I am grateful to UNICEF for giving me the opportunity to see first-hand how their programmes make a real difference in children's lives. Support for UNICEF is saving children, I am a witness to it.'
