Beyonce and Jay-Z’s recent holiday in Cuba is under scrutiny over alleged flouting of US trade embargos

Beyonce and Jay-Z caused a small stampede when they arrived in Havana, Cuba last week to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary but now the attention is focused on the pop superstars for all the wrong reasons.

Two Republican members of US congress have requested an investigation is launched into how Beyonce and Jay-Z were able to travel to the Communist-ruled country and whether they obtained permission from the government as all Americans have to.

The current long-standing trade embargo between America and Cuba means that all US citizens need a special visa to visit the country and on Friday congress members, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart asked the Office of Foreign Assets Control for information on the type of license the musicans received and what the purpose of their travel was.

One of the politicians told the BBC: ‘US dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally represses Cuban people.’

Representatives for Beyonce and Jay-Z are yet to respond to the enquiry. The penalty for traveling to Cuba without a license includes a hefty fine, although with the couple’s combined income it’s unlikely to make a dent in their savings.
