The Advertising Standards Authority has banned the Coco Mademoiselle fragrance advert from being aired during children’s programmes and films. The move comes after it was shown during a screening of animated movie, Ice Age 2 and sparked complaints from families that the advert was overtly sexual.

The commercial opens with Keira Knightley clad in a leather trouser suit riding a motorbike before she’s seen at a photo shoot in bed with her shoulders exposed and at one point it’s implied she’s naked beneath the sheets. A photographer then unzips her boots before attempting to kiss her.

Chanel have defended the advert, insisting it was playful and sensual and not overly sexual citing that Coco Chanel, has a reputation as a strong, independent woman and Keira Knightley’s character was intended to reflect that idea. They also stressed that there was no nudity and Keira’s shoulders were only shown as part of a photo shoot.
