Kate Middleton will take pride of place in the National Portrait Gallery before too long, according to reports, which reveal work has begun on an official portrait for the collection.

It's thought the painting of the Duchess of Cambridge, who is a patron of the gallery in London, will be unveiled next year.

According to the Telegraph, the identity of the artist painting the first picture of Kate Middleton to be publicly displayed, is a closely guarded secret.

Reports suggest it won't be Nicky Philipps, who has already undertaken a private commission of Kate, and was seen to be the favourite for the job.

Instead, it's thought Jemma Phipps, who undertook a portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh, could be the mystery artist.

Art lover Kate was thought to have commissioned a Nicky Phillips painting of herself, costing £25,000, as a gift for Prince William's 30th birthday.
