One Direction and Coldplay clean up at VMA's

By Lisa Potter - Friday 7 September 2012

One Direction continue their global takeover as they win an impressive three gongs at the MTV Music Video Awards last night.

The British heartthrobs proved they have well and truly broken America when they scooped three of the coveted awards, taking home trophies for Best New Artist, Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video.

Despite being up against some steep competition, with Justin Beiber also in their categories, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, were the big winners last night.

The teen boyband, who found fame on The X Factor, will be particularly chuffed they beat UK rivals The Wanted, for title of Best New Artist.

Also fairing well on the American soil was Coldplay who won Best Rock Video for their hit single Paradise, but the band couldn't make the star studded ceremony as they were performing in the Netherlands.
