Katie Holmes opens up about fashion, failure and her feelings on the media in her first post-divorce interview.

The actress, and has just been named the first celebrity face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics (she will also collaborate on a makeup collection for the line), and has become an even more high-profile target since announcing her split from husband of five years, Tom Cruise, in June, told WWD:

'I have a lot of feelings about the press. There are a lot of people with much bigger problems and who are less fortunate. I try to keep it all in perspective.'

Holmes, who is returning to Broadway in November in the comedy Dead Accounts, also said that she likes to try something new every day, without 'being afraid to fail. Who cares? At least you tried. It’s usually the people who haven’t tried who are the naysayers.'

Among her new projects is the first presentation of her Holmes & Yang collection, which she co-designs with stylist Jeanne Yang, during New York Fashion Week next Wednesday.

'We’ve been very gradual from the beginning, and part of that has been because we’ve wanted to take the time to get to know the business, get to know the right stores - and, most importantly, to get to know the customer and what she needs,' Holmes told WWD.

'In terms of the presentation versus the show, we felt a presentation was more appropriate for the clothes we sell. It’s a little more our speed in the way we wanted to go about it, and more of a transition for us from meeting privately with buyers in a hotel room to going right to a big show.'

Holmes describes her fashion label as something that she and Yang 'enjoy,' with the goal of creating 'something I can wear all the time and nobody’s going to say, "Oh, I saw that yesterday." We try to make beautiful things, and we’re not so trend-driven. We try to do a touch of rock ’n’ roll with our stuff, but keep it very classic.'

In addition to fashion, the beauty business and Broadway, Katie's still focused on her number one role as mum to Suri, six, who starts school this year. The actress confessed to a love of doing crafts with her daughter to help keep her grounded.

'I spray-paint shoe racks, because, why not?' she told WWD. 'I think, "Oh, I’m a great mom" - and then it doesn’t really pan out the way I think it’s going to. But the intention’s there. I’ve always painted and done crafts at home - I have to stay creative in every aspect [of my life]. My sister teaches art, and she gives me a lot of ideas.'
