As nominations were read out by US show host Jimmy Kimmel and actress Kerry Washington, excitement grew, as the British period drama was mentioned in several of the awards' most prestigious categories, including Best Drama Series, Best Actress and Actor awards.

Actress Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary Crawley and actor Hugh Bonneville, The Earl of Grantham, won nominations for best actor and actress respectively, while Maggie Smith and Joanne Froggatt will battle it out in the Supporting actress in a drama series category.

Brendan Coyle, who plays valet John Bates, will also go up against a co-star - Jim Carter, who plays household butler Carson.

But the Downton Abbey is facing stiff competition from a host of American shows, inclucing Mad Men which earned an amazing 17 nominations, Boardwalk Empire, Game Of Thrones and Homeland.

Earlier this year, the cast were spied filming scenes for Downton Abbey Season 3, hard at work on location in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside. And from Joanne Froggatt, who plays the lovely Anna, to bad boy Rob James-Collier, A.K.A. Thomas, all our favourite stars are back.
