Marie Claire's entertainment writer Martha Hayes on why Nick Grimshaw taking over the Radio 1 breakfast show from Chris Moyles will help her out of bed in the morning.
I am not a morning person. I’m a shower-then-out kind of girl, not a turns-on-radio-slowly-drinking-coffee one. But come September that’s all gonna change. As it will, it’s safe to say, for the majority of the 15-29 female population. Good old (well, young) Grimmers.
NICK GRIMSHAW TO REPLACE CHRIS MOYLES ON RADIO 1
Yep, when it emerged yesterday that Chris Moyles was leaving his coveted early morning slot (and every DJ's dream job) on BBC Radio 1, the REAL news swiftly followed – that his replacement is non other than quiff-haired, skinny-jeaned 27-year-old Nick Grimshaw. If the ratings-fluctuating radio station is trying to win over a new younger generation and the breakfast show supposedly dictates the station’s personality, Radio 1 has struck gold.
NICK GRIMSHAW: I THOUGHT I WAS IN TROUBLE
Like me, Grimmers is more of a night owl. He currently presents a nighttime show on Radio 1 (Sun-Thurs, 10-midnight) but if you haven’t heard him, you’ll have definitely seen him in the tabloids out on the razz with Alexa, Pixie, Aggy and co. This is a risk given that his new schedule demands 4am starts (will he just stay up all night? That is the question…) but it’s a risk that needs taking.
He’s the ultimate indie boy with his finger on the pulse of the coolest new tunes. More music and less middle-aged ranting before I’ve had my Weetabix? Yes, please.
Okay, so Chris Moyles was proclaimed ‘saviour’ of Radio 1, but that was eight years ago. Grimmers: you're up!
