Tom Cruise's 'sombre' and 'very sad' birthday

By Diana Gavrilina - Thursday 5 July 2012

Turning 50 usually involves a party, cake and a lot of candles, but in Tom Cruise's case there's little to celebrate at the moment.

Katie Holmes revealed that she was filing for divorce just days before the Mission Impossible and Top Gun star's 50th birthday. Tom Cruise ended up ditching his original plan of celebrating in New York in favour of what's been described as a 'sombre' and 'very, very sad' day.

After filming scenes for new film Oblivion in Iceland, Tom Cruise returned to Los Angeles and spent time with his adopted teenage children Connor and Isabella, from his marriage to ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

'The plan was he was going to spend his birthday with Katie and Suri [in New York City],' reported People magazine. 'Then they were going to fly to California where he is going to finish [filming] Oblivion and spend time there.'

But after Katie Holmes filed for divorce and took their daughter Suri, 6, into her care Tom had to change his plans.

He's still said to be in constant contact with his daughter Suri and a source told People: 'Say what you will about Tom, but there is no doubt he loves his daughter. Not seeing her would be very hard on him.'

But he may not have a choice.

According to Radar, Katie Holmes' lawyers have filed for an emergency custody and child support hearing in New York on 17 July where the pair will come face to face for the first time since their split.
