Amy Winehouse coroner 'not qualified'

By Lisa Potter  on Thursday 2 February 2012

The coroner who oversaw the inquest into the death of singer Amy Winehouse has resigned after her qualifications were brought into question.

Camden Council has confirmed that coroner Suzanne Greenway stood down after authorities became aware that she had not been a lawyer in the UK for the required five years.

She had been appointed to the position 'in error' by her husband Andrew Reid, the coroner for north London.

In a statement, Dr Reid said: 'In November it became apparent I'd made an error in the appointment process. While I am confident that all of the inquests handled were done so correctly, I apologise if this matter causes distress.'

AMY WINEHOUSE: A RETROSPECTIVE

Relatives of the late Back to Black singer have released a statement saying: 'The Winehouse family is taking advice on the implications of this and will decide if any further discussion with the authorities is needed.'

However Amy's father Mitch, took to his Twitter page to reassure fans, and quash rumours of the case being reopened. He wrote: 'Don't worry about coroner nonsense. We are all ok. Mitch.'

Ms Greenway ruled that Winehouse, 27, died from accidental alcohol poisoning and returned a verdict of misadventure.

The inquest into Winehouse's death heard she was more than five times over the drink-drive limit when she died on July 23 2011.
