He had a stellar year career-wise in 2011, with a string of acclaimed film and TV performances, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s 2012 has kick-started with a boom after bagging a coveted role in the next Star Trek movie.

The Sherlock star has been signed up to play a rumoured villain in the yet to be titled Star Trek sequel, which is expected to start filming in the US in the next couple of months.

Benedict, who also starred in last year’s hit espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, will team up with fellow British actor/director Noel Clarke for the 2013 release.

The two newcomers join Star Trek regulars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto who will reprise their roles as Nyota Uhura, James Kirk, Scotty and Spock respectively for the J. J. Abrams directed film.

As well as landing the Star Trek role, you can expect to see Benedict in Steven Spielberg's War Horse (which hits cinema screens on Friday 13th January), the upcoming big screen adaptation of The Hobbit, where he will play a dragon called Smaug and voice the character Necromancer, and the World War I TV miniseries Parade’s End, in what is set to be another huge year for the London-born actor.
