Salma Hayek has been knighted in France

By Suzannah Ramsdale  on Tuesday 3 January 2012

The Mexican-born actress has been named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in France's equivalent to the New Year's honours list.

Salma Hayek is due to be given the medal in a few months at the Elysees Palace by President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The 45-year-old, who is currently starring in Puss In Boots, is married to French businessman Francois-Henri Pinault, who happens to be a close friend of Sarkozy's.

Her 'knighthood' has resulted in one French former minister refusing to accept the same award and others even suggesting that Salma's honour would have Napolean 'turning in his grave.'

Previous Legion of Honour recipients include Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani and John Galliano.
