It was one of Hollywood's most scrutised relationships of the year, so when Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn split, everyone wanted to know why.

Now, the reason has reportedly emerged....

It’s understood that Oscar-winning actor Sean 'didn’t want to be tied down' and 'didn’t want anything serious' with the gorgeous 26-year-old.

Reports surfaced earlier this month that Scarlett and Sean - who is more than 20 years her senior - had split up following a whirlwind four-month romance, but this is the first time a reason has emerged.

A source speaking to Us Weekly also revealed that following the break-up, Lost in Translation star Scarlett was 'desperate' to get back together with Sean and pursued him at Spike TV Awards in Los Angeles.

However, the former hellraiser - who only divorced wife Robin in July last year - apparently tried to avoid Scarlett on the red carpet by sneaking into the bash through a back door.

Scarlett is the latest in a string of beauties to date the actor. As well as ex-wife Robin, Sean has also romanced model Petra Nemcova, actress Susan Sarandon and was married to Madonna between 1985 and 1989.
