X Factor winner Joe McElderry has been dropped by Simon Cowell’s record company SyCo, according to reports, after his solo efforts failed to impress.

The Tyneside singer was crowned the winner of the famous singing competition after being mentored by pop princess Cheryl Cole during the 2009 show.

But it seems his solo singles have failed to ignite interest, leading to poor sales and limited chart success.

Joe’s debut single, a cover of Miley Cyrus hit The Climb failed to reach the sought after Christmas number one spot, after an X Factor backlash saw music fans propel rockers Rage Against the Machine to the top instead.

His second single reached a sorry number six in the charts, while reports suggest his third could have sold as little as 7,000 copies.

It’s thought bosses made every effort boost the cheeky singer’s flailing career, but to no avail.

'Simon gave Joe the best chance possible of success by making sure he worked with some of the world's top producers,’ once insider told the Daily Mail.

'Joe's a lovely boy and it is a pity it did not work out, but no one can say Simon and his staff did not try to make it work.'

It’s thought the 'devastated' singer has moved home to Newcastle, after being told his initial record contract, which ends next month, won’t be renewed.

‘Joe is devastated,’ a friend of the 19-year-old singer revealed. ‘His mum has been comforting him.

'He believed he could have a great music career.

'Although he is still on Syco's books, his deal runs out in about a month and it won't be renewed.'

We said at the time he was on X Factor that he was a really nice lad with a great voice, but not a 'pop star'

He will be fantastic in musicals and that's where he should see his future.

How is he ever gonna get any better if they don't leep him on? The record company just clearly arnt giving him ther ight songs to sing. Not his fault.

Im not surprised, from the very start it was apparent that the likes of Global radio were not going to give Joe air time, and yes Syco are to blame ,he was an eighteen year old kid for gods sake, completely unknowledgeable in the field and should have been marketed/advised better, it was a complete balls up from the begining, the marketing was poor, the support wasn't there, Joe Mcelderry has a fantastic voice, a gorgeous face and even better is a thoroughly decent clean living young man that alone should be enough to champion the boy, he is such a good role model for our youngster! I think he was so refreshing after all the awful music thats been churned out over the last few years,There is the odd artist thats stands out but overall its appalling, there is nothing you remember, nothing you would sing in the bath, most cannot sing, most cannot even talk properly.. 'want you' becomes onechew!!

And Simon Cowell.. well theres a man who has on purpose in life.. Yes! you've got it in one
Simon Cowell,

I think this is disgusting the way they have dropped him, he was doomed from the day he won when the campaign to keep him from getting to no.1 started. I find this strange that it was started by a DJ and his wife from Essex, notice it not happen this year because the winner was from Essex. I think with X Factor if you are not from in and around London you have no-chance of succeeding, it seems funny to me that there was no campaign to stop Matt Cardle reaching no.1 at Christmas probably because he is from Essex. Then you have Olly Murs and Stacey Soloman doing well but I guess they are also from London or there abouts. So come on Simon Cowell what have you got against people from the North East, as it looks as if you dislike them, for what reason only you can answer. You need to keep Joe and try promoting him as the above mentioned get, as I have not seen anything about Joe since he won. You and your team have let him down badly. NOW IS THE CHANCE TO PUT THIS RIGHT.

There were campaigns to try and stop Cardle from being number one though...surfin' bird and Biffy version of Many of Horror, Matt was just more likeable than Joe
Comment by John Paul on April 15 16:26

Not the least surprise. His failure had nothing to do with not having a Christmas No. 1. Joe has a lovely voice and all the tweenies adored him, but he's more West End, if that, and, once he came out, *poof* went the fantasy factor, and the biggest portion of his market dried up, not that the little 11 year old girls have that much money to spend anyway.

Contrary to what Simon is fond of saying, the public DON'T always get it right. In fact, most of the time, they get it DEAD wrong. THAT is why these "winners" rarely succeed. They are a product of a relatively small percentage of viewers who engage enough to actually VOTE, but who are not the larger part of people who will later actually BUY the music.

Disgraceful - he is really talented and was given totally wrong material; trying to turn him into just another teenage singer instead of capitalising on his amazing voice and lovely personality. Let him sing songs suited to his voice - he would be straight to no 1.

i think that simon was wrong for dropping joe. he has got a great singing voice and most girls like him. i hope that somebody else takes joe on and gives him some good songs like olly has. best of luck to joe

I don't think Joe was promoted enough by his management company. I hardly heard him on the radio and never saw his album advertised on TV. Saying that Syco had given Joe every opportunity seems a lame excuse for their total lack of commitment towards him. Joe has a fabulous voice and comes across as genuinely nice guy. Simon Cowell should be ashamed of himself. Perhaps if Joe came from "down South" the story would be totally different. I wish Joe Good Luck and lots of success for the future.

rofl! Just goes to show that the people who DONT watch x-factor and DONT vote for the utter rubbish that x-factor churn out year after year get the final say! People with real taste in music just didn't spend their hard earned cash on this drivel!
