Rihanna's rage over BBC's S&M title change

Rihanna reveals puddle perm hairstyle at the 2010 American Music Awards

Rihanna’s no stranger to causing controversy - and the Bajan beauty has done just that in recent weeks, releasing risqué track S&M, along with a red-hot video. But now the star’s been left fuming, after learning bosses changed the title of her song, to make it more radio friendly.

It was first rumoured Radio One changed the title themselves – from S&M to Come On – to allow it to be played on the Sunday afternoon chart show, also ditching racier words ‘sex,’ ‘chains,’ and ‘whips,’ from the chorus.

Now it’s thought Rihanna’s record label toned down the song – which entered the charts at number 20 - amid fears the racier version would not make commercial play lists.

But whoever changed the name certainly did not inform Rihanna. The star was alerted to the newly christened track, after a fan pointed it out to her on Twitter.

‘Are you f**king kidding me??? I'm on it!’ Rhi wrote in reply.

And when asked if she approved of the title, she fumed, ‘Absolutely NOT!!!’

But Rihanna needn’t worry. The BBC have revealed they still play to plan the un-edited version of the track, but will be saving it for after hours.

‘During daytime hours, as younger audiences are listening, we are playing the radio edit which is called Come On,’ a spokesman said in a statement.

‘However, we will continue to play the original track in specialist shows with an appropriate introduction.

'It is common practice to play radio edits of certain tracks in daytime.

What are your thoughts on Rihanna’s latest single? Should the name have been changed? Is she becoming too risqué? Let us know in the comments box below.

loads of young & i mean young kids look upto her & listen to her music.she should realise this & shouldn,t have a problem with them playing the edited version for these youngers one & then the un-edited can be played at appropiate times.

I think her video is a bit over the top, but anyone who knows who Rihanna is, will know that her videos are reknowened for being 'racy'. I think it probably shouldn't be played during daytime when children could see it (if i was a mother i would be absolutely fuming) as it is highly inappropriate for audiences under..say 16 years old. But I do think the title change is very cheeky, it's not right that they changed it without informing Rihanna herself!! I definitely think the 'S&M' title is fine. However, limiting the video til after hours is probably for the best.

Totally agree with SANDZ
I have an 8 year old, who loves Rihanna, and many other R&B artisits, and it's hard to let go of the parental reigns and allow them to listen at will, when wording and video images are only suitable for adult audiences.

It does puzzle me why these artists think their tracks need swearing, voilence and sex - can't the music alone sell it to the public?

I wonder if she will regret these videos when she is the mother of an impressionable girl herself?
Comment by Wendy Jones on February 08 16:12

Maybe Rihanna should walk around naked and then we can all decide how much clothes we want to see her in by voting. It's clear that she is moving her career in a different direction. Good for her because this is what she is now comfortable with. However its sad for her young fans who liked her in the beginning for her music and now they wont get the chance to progress with her career (because any responsible parent out there should limit their child's access to her music and videos). Its clearly aimed at men of sexual maturity. I read an interview of her a few years ago where she said something like ' I always ask a lot of questions when I'm told to do something because people will try and exploit you' Well, I think somebody stopped asking questions a long time ago...

I appreciate she has younger fans but she also has just as many adult fans if not more. So why should she make everything she does family friendly? As she gets older, her interests are going to change and if you don't like the direction she is heading then you should introduce your children to different artists
Comment by Laura on February 08 19:05

I am horrified and pretty disgusted that she is trying to get lower and dirtier all the time to sell records which is like lady gaga and if you have your looks and a good voice as she does it shouldn't be necessary to strip off to taunt and tease men when i have no men doing the same in a music video, not that i would encourage that either. Why do so many women have to pout and strip off to sell records. Men don't so why should we. They have more sense. We are not sex objects and when she has kids wonder how her attitude will change then huh ?????
Comment by paula on February 08 22:34

It would seem from Laura's comment that she does not have young impressionable children. Her comment is that of someone who has not had the hard task of teaching your children things, which are then undone by visiting friends houses or going into town where they are not under your control.
Surely it is better for artists like Rihanna to make 2 videos one for general release and one for 'adult' release - and certainly not be naive enough to think that just because she is a 'star' she can do as she pleases.

the use of vulgar words and image isn't the only way to be cool and egdy is it?

come on rihanna, impress us with your own creativity.not controversy.

Comment by Amelie on February 09 12:03

Oh this is really ridiculous, I didn't know the UK was as uptight as America! Yes sure, Rihanna's songs are a bit naughty but we all know that and maybe if you're so concerned you shouldn't let your kids listen to her. I personally don't see the point of her oversexualized image but if that's the artist she wants to be, then she's perfectly entitled to that. She's a performer and an adult and she shouldn't have to think about all the'impressionable kids', it's the parents job to steer them in the right direction.
Comment by Frida on February 09 12:16

i really lv her songs an bought every album but nw it seems when making the vidoes its all about male attention an nt about stroung women ! an how are her feamale fans supposed to watch the music vids without feeling uncomfartble !
Comment by sam on February 09 15:26

Can't quite believe people are making so much fuss about it to be honest. It's an awesome track and kids kare exposed to much worse stuff these days, if you censor everything it is just going to cause them to be more curious and eventually will find out about this stuff anyway, and it might not be in such a controlled environment as hearing a song on the radio or seeing a video on MTV. If banning songs is the future what is next magazines, the net, where do you draw the line? Censorship has never worked so get with the times people and lighten up a little.
