Actor John Travolta’s wife Kelly Preston has spoken out on controversial religion Scientology’s practice of silent birth, revealing she was banned from speaking when she went into labour with baby son Benjamin.

But far from criticising Scientology’s strict birthing rules, the star – who already has a daughter, Ella, and sadly lost son Jett last year – has praised the practice, revealing it has left her children 'calm and peaceful'.

Telling how she was forbidden to talk during labour, Kelly revealed L. Ron Hubbard’s religion teaches that noise during birth can affect children during later life.

In an interview with America’s Today Show, she spoke out on the common Scientology practice, adding that she is certain that it worked for her children.

'It's just no words as much as possible. If you need to moan, if you cry out or all of that, of course, is normal,’ she said of the silent birth practice. ‘But just bringing them in as peaceful and gentle a way as possible.'

'L. Ron Hubbard found that the single source of aberration, of psychosomatic illnesses, stress, fears, worry, things like that, have to do with the reactive mind,' she added, 'and in that part of the mind is different words and commands that can come back to affect you later in your life,’ she added.

'I'm blessed with, my kids have always been amazing, very calm, very peaceful, happy, and I absolutely know that it's very much because of that.'

Scientology is essentially a mind-control network set up to extract the most money it can from it's members as well as to enforce the maximum amount of production out of each individual, at minimal or no cost to the organization. It's as simple as that.

Absolutely bloody bonkers. Where's the proof that their children are calmer as a result of a quiet birth? It's ridiculous!

Nothing to do with being really priviledged / rich/ then?

Scientology is about freedom, knowing. Yes, it's very different from the original set-up. There are many other organisations for profit, too... This practise is a belief system - as is this world, take a look. Kelly is doing her best as a mum. We are the sum total of what we believe, each one of us!

I can kind of see where they're coming from- even though Scientology generally sounds like brain washing bonkers.

Looking a my child, and those of my friends, I do see a difference in those who came into the world by cesearan- nice & quietly, and those who came in to the sounds of screaming (and boy did some of them scream).

Could be coincidence, could be madness.
it would be nice to see a real medical study, to see if it supports their beliefs.

"In an interview with America’s Today Show, she spoke out on the common Scientology practice, adding that she is certain that it worked for her children." I'm sure it works and all, but isn't it because of their religion that they wouldn't let their son take medication for his epilepsy which cause him to have a fit? I could be wrong but that's not exactly worked for your children has it? Anyone can try and be quiet during birth if they wanted it to be calm and peaceful.

I can solve all of society's problems by taping up women's mouths in childbirth and we will all be calm and happy. So simple.
It make's SO MAD obviously my mother screamed the hospital down when she had me. PS i will encourage women to yell at the top of their voices next time i am deliverying a baby. 'My husband BANNED me' is this the dark ages?
Comment by Susanna on January 21 20:39

Sorry got to add another comment because it makes me so mad. It is another example of women making themselves feel guilty, if you find that you are needing to be noisy in childbirth because that is how you can cope then i do not believe it will have any affect on the behaviour and psychology of your children. I have never known a midwife to comment that so and so's baby was very unsettled last night - must have been because she screamed the baby out. There is absolutely no correlation between the two and i have been a midwife for over 13 years. Thankyou

Ah, so that explains it.
When I was born in the beautiful medical system of Soviet Union, the nurses would be very angry if my mother tried to scream. So she didn't. That's why me and my sister are such well-adjusted people. The Soviet nurses were Scientologists. I wish I had known that earlier.

.... what a bloody nonsense.... of course it was a man who made these stupid rules! if he had to give birth he might have changed his mind....control freak.

A woman does what she will feel comfortable at the time.. everyone is different.... if you don't want to talk or scream that's fine.... as long as your not screaming or berating your kids after they are born and during upbringing...

I seem to remember that it was almost exactly two years ago (January 2009 and not last year as the article states) that the Travoltas' adherence to 'Scientology's strict rules' allegedly led to the unnecessary death of their son Jett when, it is said, vital drug treatment was withdrawn with tragic consequences.

What is wrong with with these people, have they lost sight of the fact that this 'religion' was the brainchild of a crackpot science fiction writer? In my opinion, to base your life on his irrational teachings would be no less crazy than taking advice for life from the nutter who sits next to you on the bus.

Dear "Objective"
What a fool you are running around the internet! What makes you the way you are? Seems to me it is you and your Anonymous friends are trying to establish a mind-control network. For the last 60 years we have been helping people live better lives. What have you been doing. It's amazing how many critics there are and how very few there are doing God's work.
