With a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award already under his belt, Mr Firth received another Best Actor nod at announcement ceremony this morning, while the film also won nominations for Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Natalie Portman’s psychological thriller Black Swan is also tipped to do well, garnering twelve nods, including Best Actress for the star herself, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.

But this year’s golden pair face stiff competition.

Colin will go up against Javier Bardem, James Franco and Jesse Eisenberg in the race for the coveted leading man award, while Natalie competes with Naoomi Rapace, Annette Benning and 14-year-old newcomer, Hailee Steinfeld.

The only gong voted for solely by the British public, the Orange Wednesday's Rising Star Award, last year's Rising Star award went to Kristen Stewart, with other previous recipients including James McAvoy, Eva Green and Shia Lebeouf.
