We could hardly contain our excitement back in October when reports surfaced that country star Taylor Swift was dating heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaall. But now it seems the short-lived romance is already over, with sources revealing the relationship ended in December.

Despite being pictured cosying up over thanksgiving, it’s thought the romance fizzled out during December, and the picture-perfect pair spent Christmas apart.

'They're over,' one source told People magazine. 'It ended last month.'

And the couple wasted no time in going their separate ways. Taylor was spotted seeing in the New Year at a Nashville party, while Jake spent the special time partying in New York, before treating his mum to dinner at trendy eatery, The Spotted Pig.

Reps have yet to comment on the separation, but rumours on the reasons behind the split are already starting to circle.

And it seems Jake could have been behind the break-up.

'Jake reached out to her and started all of this, but now he’s not acting as interested,' one insider told American magazine, Us Weekly.

'He said he wasn't feeling it anymore and was uncomfortable with all the attention they got.

'He also said he could feel the age difference. Taylor is really upset. We told her not to move so fast with this but she didn't listen.

'Jake cares about her, but [the publicity] was a lot for him. He wants to keep his private life private, and that’s hard to do dating Taylor.'

Shock. Seriously, people...it's published they were 'engaged' well, if they were SO stupid as to decide they were ready for something as important as marriage after 10m of seeing each other..it's hardly news that these two have split up. I imagine he might've realised that someone barely out of diapers might not be ready for marriage. If it was just a good time for both of them, again, hardly a 'shock' they've split.
