Hollywood power couple Courteney Cox and David Arquette have announced they are to split, after eleven years of marriage.

Confirming they have been undergoing a period of 'trial separation' for the past few months, the pair released a joint statement in response to speculation by several US magazines.

The couple insist they 'remain best friends' and ‘still love each other deeply’, but 'want to ‘better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage.’

It’s thought they’ll share custody of their daughter, Coco, six.

‘We have agreed to a trial separation that dates back for some time,’ they said in a statement. ‘The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage.

‘We remain best friends and responsible parents to our daughter and we still love each other deeply. As we go though this process we are determined to use kindness and understanding to get through this together.

'We are comfortable with the boundaries that we have established for each other during this separation and we hope that our friends, family, fans and the media also show us respect, dignity, understanding and love at this time as well,' the statement ended.

Courteney and David met on the set of cult horror flick Scream in 1996, and were married in 1999, tying the knot in a simple Californian ceremony and exchanging rings engraved with ‘a deal is a deal’.

Speculation has already begun mounting on the cause of the split, with some suggesting David has been spotted on 'dates' with an unknown woman.

Others have linked Courteney to her Cougar Town co-star Brian Van Holt, after the pair were spied dining out alone several times in recent weeks.

It seems problems could have arisen as far back as last December, with Court admitting they were undergoing marriage counselling.

And the couple are thought to have been living apart for months, under the terms of their trial separation. ‘Courteney and David have been living in separate homes for some time,’ a source added.

Surely if you are 'best friends and love each other deeply' then you remain married? Sounds like a load of crap to me.

I feel sorry for their young daughter. A divorce is no good for any young child no matter how much wealth or fame their parents have.

I wonder if all the problems with having a second child have caused this rift...what a shame....or they have just grown apart..its a way of life in Hollywood...mayb it will all come together in the future..who knows.

...There has been so much press for so long over their marriage and family and in the US mags...its been a long time coming. But so sad all the same

They never seemed solid to me and have had issues in the past, so I'm not really surprised. Divorce is a shame, but if you're not happy together, then it's the right option. It's not like they didn't try.
