It’s thought worried ITV bosses are looking for an X Factor replacement, after fears the hit show may not be back on our screens next year.

The singing competition is currently in its seventh year, and it’s thought Simon Cowell could be in talks to take the talent contest stateside, with some suggesting the media mogul could enlist the help of Cheryl Cole to launch the show in the US.

It has also been rumoured Mr Cowell is considering leaving the UK show altogether, to concentrate on his American efforts.

Now it seems the talk has worried British bosses, who are said to be thinking about pulling the plug completely if their two top judges jump ship.

‘Despite their public assurances that X Factor will be back next year, bosses are increasingly uneasy that they could be mistaken and their most successful and profitable show will vanish until 2012 and may not even come back at all,’ one ITV source told the Mirror.

'They can't take anything for granted and that's why they have decided to draw up these contingency plans,' the insider added.

'The fact that Simon hasn't signed the deal yet has made everyone very jittery indeed - especially in these lean financial times.'

What are your thoughts on the X Factor dilemma? Would you like to see the show return next year, or would it be good to see something new? Let us know in the comments box below.

I love watching 'X Factor' and 'Britain's Got Talent'. I really loved the bit when that girl called Cher Llyod was singing 'Turn your swag on' by souja boy. It was great.
