Daybreak beaten by BBC Breakfast
It was launched amid much fanfare heralding a new dawn in breakfast TV, but ITV's new show Daybreak is already losing out to rivals BBC Breakfast.
Daybreak is hosted by former BBC presenters Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles who fronted The One Show. They moved to ITV for a rumoured £10m joint pay deal.
But the figures are not adding up today - Daybreak scored just over 1million viewers on its second outing, compared with BBC's 1.4million.
Although Daybreak's figures are an improvement on it's predecssor GMTV, with 660,000 viewers in its last week, fans of the old show are campaigning to bring it back.
After Daybreak launched on Monday, the Twit-osphere was swamped with angry comments, and the MCOnline comments section become a lengthy plea for ITV producers to re-install their favourite breakfast show.
Former GMTV presenter Eamonn Holmes has now waded into the row, saying he turned down the chance to present Daybreak and criticising Bleakley for her apparent rapid rise to fame.
'I was offered the role but turned it down. Yes, I guess it was a difficult decision but I don’t regret it. Why would I? I get to work with great people every day,' he told the Daily Star.
Holmes currently hosts Sunrise on Sky TV, another breakfast show. He has been friends with Bleakley for years, but has apparently said she's 'getting too big for her boots'.
'Oh yes, Miss Stratosphere. So pleased for her; let’s just hope she doesn’t forget about the little people as she continues to rise,' he says.

I used to love watching GMTV every morning before work. I'm 21 and enjiyed the presenters and the way they made the tedious normal news broadcasts lighter and made you feel like a part of the show. I think ITV have made a mistake by changing absolutely everything about an amazing show and quite frankly I now cannot stnad even watching TV in the morning. Also the new presenters give me a headache before I even leave for work which isn't a good thing. I do not understand why Adrian feels the need to try and make a joke about everything when it isn't even funny and even worse why does Christine feel the need to absolutely laugh her head off and hang on every word!!!
BRING BACK GMTV!!
Comment by Kayleigh on September 08 16:03
I feel the show is rubbish .It is just the same as The One show, which I didn't watch.Such a shame to loose the old GMTV team.I dont watch it anymore. this team no good compared to the Previous show.
Comment by a beckles on September 08 16:04
Simple Really........Bring back GMTV
Daybreak needs to go!!
Comment by Steve W on September 08 16:30
I couldnt agree more with Kayleigh, I used to love the old GMTV, I can not stand Adrian or Christine!! I also refused to tune into the One Show because of these two presenter's! GMTV should feel soooo bad about how they treated a great team of presenter's, they were bright, funny and down to earth. These two are very irritating, borring and annoying especially Adrian, his voice and lack of attractiveness makes me tune into BBC 1. You have ruined my mornings before work, so thanks alot!
Comment by Michelle on September 08 16:32
Bring back GMTV, Kate, Andrew, Ben etc etc, the new show is rubbish certainly not watchable. I used to love watching GMTV with all the banter. Richard Arnold was a hoot. Bad and costly decision ITV.
Comment by Maureen Oates on September 08 16:45
watched first morning then tried again 2nd only lasted 15 mins sorry it is just not the same as GMTV with relaxed and happy presenters. ITV you have wasted a lot of money on presenters who are just not good enough for morning tv they are so boring. bring back presenters with smiles and calm voices
Comment by yvonne on September 08 16:49
Day break is absolute rubbish bland and boring. I have turned now to BBC and SKY news I cant believe two people can be so clicky leaving us the public left out as if we are not in their gang. I loved GMTV even tho with their many presenters they were always warm. The background furniture is plain and the colour purple was last year!
Comment by janice gilbert on September 08 18:01
What have you done. I know for one you've made a huge mistake.Loved gmtv thats mainly the only bit of tv i sat down and watched with my cereal before work and school took over. The new colour of the set is dull and boring and as for the presenters they slouch and lean over themselves. I never watched the one show why take away our familier faces for such a irratating couple. Im one viewer you,ve lost to disney channel and after speaking to others im not the only one. Bring back our familar faces.
Comment by dawnjohnson on September 08 18:31
I have always watched GMTV while getting ready for work in the morning, and have given Daybreak 3 mornings, but i can't watch it anymore. Have now switched to BBC and was quite surprised that i enjoyed the Beeb much more than Daybreak.
Comment by Jess on September 08 18:39
Its a great change to see new faces in the morning. GMTV was getting very dated and boring.....
I'm enjoying Daybreak
Comment by Andy in Ivybridge on September 08 18:48
Daybreak is pants, looks like they brought the set over from the BBC. Adrian Chiles has as much charisma as a stuffed marrow. Bring back GMTV. Big mistake ITV !
Comment by Paul on September 08 19:04
As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley are absolutely terrible. BRING BACK GMTV
Comment by Sara on September 08 19:30
I used to love getting up in the morning and watching GMTV it was one big happy family, very relaxed. The setting very homely and the presenters down to earth. These new presenters look in pain, sitting on the edge of the seats, leaning forward eyes screwed up as though trying to read the q card. No atmosphere at all, like watching BBC1, cold and boring. I won't be watching anymore, bring back the old team and set please.
Comment by Chris Spence on September 08 19:39
I don't normally comment on such things as tv but I want to voice my opion at how disappointed I am with the new show,it is so boring and dull as dish water. The old gmtv team were funny and entertaining.Adrian and Christine look uncomfortable on the sofa and Adrian looks like he needs glasses he's always squinting at the autoqueue. Not their fault it's ITV's bad decision and I think they will lose quite a few viewers. My mornings will never be the same.
Comment by Lyn on September 08 20:08
Couldn't disagree more, GMTV were losing viewers daily, it became wooden and boring, i really like adrian, i actually want to laugh at his corny jokes before i leave for a stressful day at work, he relates to the ordinary person, although it was a huge mistake to lose richard arnold, and lorraine show should have been re-vamped to the fiona phillips show, considering so many people are saying they wont watch it, why have viewers figures increased from gmtv, give them a chance i say
Comment by sharon on September 08 20:59
I hate watching those two on Daybreak, they are both sooo dull and boring and don't seem to know how to handle themselves. Why did they fix something that wasn't broken, it's a mess and I have tried to watch them but can't, so YES i will be going over to BBC in the morning until they get rid of those two I cant even bring myself to say their names.
Comment by sandra o'hagan on September 08 21:08
I watched the first show this week and that was enough for me. I am not keen on BBC but I would rather watch that than Daybreak. The old team really gelled and I used to love watching GMTV while getting ready for work as it was fun to watch and made a good start to each day with the friendly banter and down to earth attitude of all the presenters. Big bosses may have the attitude that viewers will come back as people don't like change but they will come round. Sorry - in my case this won't happen as I feel there is no connection can be made with these two presenters as they are not "one of us" - normal down to earth people. They seem to be trying to be something they aren't, probably to try to win over the viewers. They will never be a patch on the GMTV team. Bring back Ben, Kate, Andrew, Richard, Emma. Not forgetting Penny, I know she was the first to go but I think she should be back with the team, she really made me laugh when she was on the show.
Comment by Janice Bentham on September 09 00:59
Christine big laugh makes me feel sick...adrian tries to make a joke of everything...put them back on the one show and bring back GMTV or we off to BBC ! Mark from Portsmouth
Comment by Mark on September 09 07:06
i am a tv producer and i cannot understand why on earth they would put those presenters on,the name is rubbish the set is bland and the camera work has even gone down hill ...there is no way this can last ,i am very disapointed used to love gmtv
Comment by phil on September 09 07:48
I used to look forward to getting up and switching on GMTV, now i cant even be bothered to watch the tele. The daybreak show is so boring with those two presenters and they look so uncomfortable on that sofa. They are always slouched forward like their backs are hurting them. Please bring back GMTV
Comment by Kathryn McGrath on September 09 07:56
Wholeheartedly agree with all these comments. For the same reasons I couldn't watch The One Show because of the presenters, constantly snuggling up to each other with a tantalizing brush of the arms. And they're doing the same on this programme. Sickly. Who wants to see it? And why is everything purple? Cheap and nasty. First thing in the morning it's enough to put you off your breakfast. Dreadful programme. What's happened to all our dear favourites? Have they been sacked? At £10 million for those two - my cat could do better.
Comment by ruth on September 09 09:32
I agree with Yvonne I watched this morning for 5 minutes and then switched to BBC. The presenters do not have the relaxed banter, the jokes between them, the personal touch and the dark colours of the set is not relative to a bright morning wake me up show.
Comment by lorraine on September 09 10:18
Tried for two days to watch but have given up and gone over to the BBC. GMTV had it's faults but at least it had decent presenters who gave the impression they were enjoying the start to the day, even if they didn't. This is utter trash TV and the set looks like it has been dragged out of a skip, it's the most un-appealing set I've ever seen. I hope this show follows in the steps of Elderado etc. Kate must be looking at this tripe and wondering why she agreed to stay.
Comment by Karl on September 09 16:44
I never watched the one show as I cant stand Adrian.Gmtv was great and also Penny Smith is better than Kate galloway.I just find it stupid now and won't watch it any more.
Comment by Anne Plumridge on September 10 08:17
what have they done !!!
I never e-mail but had to in regard to the mess of a show now. I am so down and miss GMTV since I retired I loved to watch GMTV I find daybreak with BORING and I am now watching BBC Breakfast. Please bring back GMTV
Comment by jlyons1955@talktalk.net on September 10 08:45
I also dont want to watch the new programme´- I tried for about two minutes and was so bored. I thought Adrian was boring on the One show so could not watch that so... should not have been surprised. His colleague is not that good either but as I have not seen her before am prepared to give her benefit of doubt - please bring our brilliant Andrew Castle back - he makes everything such fun and is a really good guy to look at too - could not Adrian go back to presenting politics or money programmes. I can't imagine how boring the days are going to be now through this long cold winter. I also find it astounding that millions of pounds were allotted to two really boring dull people. Hope you bring back the GMTV format too - this one is awful. I now watch BBC - good that Eamon Holmes did not apply for the job too - he is a turn off looks wise but not quite so much as Adrian as he has a pleasant way about him and the personal touch!! PLEASE BRING ANDREW & KATE BACK - the best team ever!!!
Comment by Patricia on September 10 11:11
i totally agree with everyone on here, bring back GMTV, i cant stand these 2 people, Adrian has already ruined my footy experience on ITV now he wants to ruin my mornings too, and all she wants to do is laugh at everything and show herself off!!!
BRING BACK GMTV!!
Comment by manda on September 10 12:32
I still cannot believe that GMTV has been replaced with such rubbish. I agree with Beckles who didn't watch The One Show because of the presenters, and now they have replaced my favourite morning show... I've given it a week, think I'll have to find another channel next week - just cannot stand Adrian Chiles!
Comment by Juliette on September 10 15:23
I agree with everyone these two are appalling and not worth the money I lasted 3 days I found the presenters on GMTV sent me off to work with a smile.
Comment by Jacqui L on September 10 15:34
Never thought I would end up tuning in to BBC TV in the mornings but it is leaps and bounds better than Daybreak. Bring back the old GMTV. Wondering why Lorraine was not axed - all sjhe does is agree with everybody. Andrew and Richard my favourites. Pleae bring back the old GMTV !!!!!! Lots of my friends and colleages feel the same and will be joining campaign to get rid of Daybreak and bring back GMTV. Barbara
Comment by Barbara Hyde on September 10 22:22
I decided to watch Daybreak, and give it a try......I hated everything about it, ESP Adrian Chiles, they should send him back to commenting on football, his face and voice go through me.
After a couple of days of the new show I decided enough was enough and haven't watched it since.
GMTV was something I really enjoyed watching every morning and I really miss the programme and the presenters....mornings will never be the same again. I can't imagine that I will ever tune in to the new programme again.
Comment by Annette on September 14 11:15
Utter rubbish, who wants to look at a frowning/squinting pair of presenters early morning and watch such boring content
bring back GMTV please
Comment by cooly680 on September 14 14:28
Me and my family used to watch GMTV every morning before setting out for work and school. After watching 5mins of its replacement Daybreak we turned over to BBC Breakfast. We agree with other comments it was a bad moving getting rid of GMTV, you have ruined our mornings, Thanks a lot!!!!
