By Sarah Karmali on Tuesday 17 August 2010

With a slew of A-list starlets having previously been linked to the part, Columbia Pictures has finally confirmed their decision to eschew the big names, instead casting a relative newcomer as the anti-social computer hacker.
The 25-year-old is to star alongside Daniel Craig, who's been cast as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the silver screen adaptation of Stieg Larsson's bestselling book.
The American actress has previously starred in the 2010 remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, as well as making TV apperances in Law & Order and ER - meaning that landing the coveted role of Lisbeth Salandar will be a massive boost to her fledgling career.
But she's got relatively big shoes to fill...
The Swedish-language film adaptation of the book - starring actress Noomi Rapace - saw her receive rave reviews for her portrayal of the now world-famous character.
Filming for Hollywood version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo begins next month in Sweden, to be directed by David Fincher, and set for release in December 2011.
Both Rooney and Daniel have also signed up to appear in the sequel titles that make up the trilogy - The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

Great idea - a lesser known actress won't detract from the character. Can't wait to see it!

I still think it's horrible that Hollywood has to remake an already great film.

Whether it's someone unknown or a major star the main thing about Lisbeth Salander is that her physical appearance is a key part of her character; in the book she is described as tiny and doll like often mistaken for a child or a boy.
I wouldn've liked to see Ellen Page, but at least Scarlett Johanson didn't get it who was linked at one stage!
The Swedish film is a must see, will be hard to beat.
