UPDATE: Revolutionary Road sparked end for Kate and Sam
By Sarah Karmali on Tuesday 16 March 2010
After announcing their separation yesterday, friends of Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes claim that their marriage first hit the rocks during the filming of Revolutionary Road.
Mendes directed his wife in the award-winning movie opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, which was about a couple going through a stormy break-up.
During the promotion of the film last year, Kate admitted that she'd found it awkward being directed by her husband - particularly during sex scenes with her former Titanic co-star.

'I just kept saying, "This is too weird,"' she said in an interview last year. 'Leo told me to get over it, but I said, "You're my best friend and he's my husband. This is definitely a bit weird."'

Kate and Sam, who were married back in 2003, reportedly split earlier during the year, but released a joint statement yesterday, confirming the separation.
'The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement,' it read. 'Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children.'
Rumours began circulating that all was not well within the marriage, when Kate attended both the BAFTAs and the Oscars without her director husband.
A friend of the actress has said that she now plans to divorce Mendes, saying: 'That's it, it is final.'
'Kate is devastated. She thought their marriage was forever, and now she has two children from two marriages and both are not living with their fathers.'

Kate is currently in Mexico with her two children, Joe, six and Mia, nine, who was from her previous marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton.
Sam Mendes is currently in the US, where he is working on a couple of Shakespeare theatre productions.
'He became bored working on his latest theatrical project and he took that boredom home with him,' says a source close to the director.
'That led to the spark being taken out of their marriage.'

What a ridiculous thing to say! The majority of people are bored with their jobs and manage to have a happy relationship.

Its very sad but if you dont love someone you cant be made to and its better to break up than to stay togather and be miserable the kids would be much happier if they all get along togather without hate

I guess it just goes to show that all the money, success and beauty in the world still don't guarantee a happy and harmonious love life. Poor Kate, I hope she finds lasting happiness with someone someday.

Quite right, a ridiculolus comment all relationships ebb and flow. Its just too easy to thro away wot about the poor kids.

For me this was a risk, rather like swinging - in theory not necessarily 'wrong', but how many people would feel loved and respected if their partner was happy to see them getting it on with someone else? Acting or not, if you truly love your partner then it's going to feel weird.
As for the boredom thing, well that's just a daft excuse. With all that these presumably intelligent people have available to them in their very privileged lives, the word should not even come up.

Sam has always seemed selfish and self-absorbed. But now's your chance, Kate - go after Leo diCaprio, you always look so great together, he's a decent guy with good values and you say he's your best friend....

boredom home with him'
Seems like a pretty simplistic decoy explanation... they're hardly likely to air really dodgy laundry in public. It seems a real shame as they're both terribly clever and talented, but you don't throw away a marriage overnight. There's obviously bigger issues, but they're people and deserve their privacy.
And not to indulge in schadenfreude (ever!) but hey, it's somewhat comforting to know that earnest office workers aren't the only ones unlucky in love.

PS no matter what Kate Winslet says to the media in her soundbites about Leonardo being her "best friend"... can you really see her being with an ego monster like that?! If an Israeli supermodel can't get her feet under the table, good luck with two kids by two different baby-dads.
I am not dissing LDC as a talent, but we don't know them personally, remember. He plays nice guys, but then, don't we all???

The release said this was an 'amicable' split, yet already the bitchy comments have started to spill about who's 'fault' it was!
It takes two people to make a successful marriage and it is TWO people's fault when it breaks down! The only people analysing this should be Kate and Sam - learn from their mistakes and move on (or more ideally? back together).....

It is not something any man would ever be proud of. But,monogamy is not a natural instinct for both males and females. Socialisation has rendered the female species to be more docile than their male counterparts, and also the general expectation for women to cling to their man, inhibits women from expressing the same sexual freedom. It may not be politically correct. But,it is an established fact that women show much more design and acquaisant when they suspect or find out that another woman have designs on their partner.
That is why polygamy is and should be the answer. So that everybody is aware of the score. There are cultures where women have the upper hand. Personally, I would never contemplate on cheating on my partner.
