Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes have announced they are separating.

The golden Hollywood couple reportedly split earlier this year, but only confirmed the news today.

In a statement from their London-based lawyers, the pair said the separation was 'entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement'.

The news will come as a surprise to many, having seen Kate looking her cheerful best on the red carpet during the recent red-carpet awards season, where she was on hand to present gongs at both the BAFTAs and Oscars.

Kate married Mendes in a secret beach wedding back in 2003, and their son, Joe, was born the same year adding to a family which already included Kate's daughter, Mia, from her previous marriage to Jim Threapleton.

'Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children,' continues the statement. 'They ask that the media respect the privacy of the family.'
