Oscar history was made last night, as Kathryn Bigelow became the first ever woman to pick up the coveted Best Director statue for The Hurt Locker.
One of the night's big winners, the flick took home six Oscars, including the Best Picture, beating favourite Avatar, which has become the highest-grossing film in history.

In the main acting categories, Sandra Bullock was name Best Actress for the Blind Side. She took to the podium to tearfully thank her mother, who died in 2000, for 'reminding her daughters that there's no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love.'

Best Actor went to Jeff Bridges, for his leading role in Crazy Heart, while Best Supporting Actor was won by Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.
There were no surprises in the Best Supporting Actress category, with favourite Mo'Nique bagging the coveted award for her role in Precious.
