How to get into ...

Victoria Beckham judged by critics for 'gaunt' and off-putting appearance

Victoria Beckham made her debut on American Idol just yesterday, and the verdict is already in. But it's not good.

After bagging a much-coveted guest spot on the judging panel of one of the biggest shows in the US, it could have been the start of big things for Victoria.

But it seems destined not to be, after the famous Mrs Beckham was panned by critics AND viewers for her appearance on the show.

Victoria was branded 'off-putting' and a 'failure' by those unimpressed with her on screen antics.

The Los Angeles Times said of her appearance: 'The night's saddest failure, however, was guest judge Victoria Beckham, who actually made plenty of appealing comments and bonded beautifully with fellow judge Kara DioGuardi but whose gaunt appearance was so off-putting it might have cost her the slot DeGeneres eventually won.'

But it seems Mrs B didn't have that much of an impact on everyone.

Contestant Janet McNamara had to have her memory jogged as to who the famous fashionista was, after getting the judges mixed up.

When Randy Jackson pointed to Victoria asking, 'Do you know who this is?' she replied: 'That's err... Victoria Beckham. David Beckham's wife?' Fellow judge then Kara laughed to Mrs B: 'That's all you are honey, sorry'.

Oh dear.

So it may be a while before Victoria graces our screens again.

What did you think of Victoria's performance on American Idol? Do you think critics have been too tough on her? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.

Oh poor Posh. I think she'd actually make a pretty good judge - I just don't think they quite get her over there!

I feel a bit sorry for Victora - it seems she's damned whatever she does. I think probably American's don't understand her sense of humour, and I do agree she's too thin...
Comment by Emily on January 14 11:24

I can't believe she was so bad that she deserves all these negative comments, 'Off Putting' and 'Failure' are pretty harsh. I may not be a huge VB fan myself, but cut her some slack!
Comment by miss B on January 14 12:16

This all seems pretty harsh. I'm not a huge fan of her and I do think she's scarily thin, but I don't think her looks are any more off putting than a plethora of others to grace our TV screens. I do actually agree that she'd be a good judge too, she seems to tell it like it as a lot of the time.
Comment by Jade on January 14 12:30

God help her! If she gained or lost a pound the critics would gloat! She has a great wit and personality but they might not get that over there. I hope she is strong enough to withstand the bad vibes of envy.

Lollipop head strikes again
Comment by Michelle on January 14 12:39

I love Victoria and thought she did a great job - she had something nice and constructive to say to everyone!
Comment by Elle on January 14 12:40

It's her own fault for endlessly trying to perpetuate her own pointless celebrity. Which as far as I can see is a) for being a wife b) for being bony.
Comment by Liz on January 14 12:45

I don't think she was a failure at all although she did make rather more comments about what the contestants were wearing than about their vocal abilities. I have to say the only off putting thing about her is her weight. Painfully thin. Quite un-attractive and un-healthy looking. Not really a good role model for young girls. However I thought she was pleasant and the comments she actually did make on their vocal abilities were sympathetically honest and accurate....
Comment by Lydia on January 14 12:45

I thought Holywood was the place for VB it would appear she doesn't do herself any favours. Some say they don't get her sense of humour, but I don't think there's much of a sense of humour to get. VB cares about VB and that invariably shows. She is gaunt and is a poor role model for young gals. I don't wish her ill, but I don't believe television is the place for her.
Comment by mimi on January 14 13:06

I thought she was great I loved the way she put Simon in his place she is what the show needs the Americans can be so shallow
Comment by shirlej on January 14 13:08

I can't believe people are defending her, she wouldn't do the same for them. I wish her well, but not for girls to see and approve of, she belongs behind the scenes.
Comment by mddm on January 14 13:11

EVERYTHING THEY SAID ABOUT HER - I AGREE.... AND I HAVE TO ADD SHE WAS A VERY POOR JUDGE..... I MEAN WHAT CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS DID SHE ACTUALLY MAKE TO THE CONTESTANTS..... APART FROM REPEATING HERSELF... I LIKE THAT ... AND USED THE WORD NICE ABOUT A THOUSAND TIMES.... AND SHE KEPT LOOKING TO SIMON... AND ADKING HIM WHAT HE THOUGHT..... WHAT DID THEY ACTUALLY PAY HER FOR.... EVEN SIMON AT ONE POINT FORGOT SHE WAS THERE... WHEN HE MISSED HER VOTE FOR ONE OF THE CONTESTANTS.... AND SHE SAID..'' DON'T YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO SAY?''..

WHEN I FIRST HEARD HE WAS GOING TO PUT HER ON THERE .... I THOUGHT WHATEVER FOR? I MEAN SHE CAN'T SING ANYWAY. THE ONLY REASON SHE IS ON THERE IS BECAUSE OF SIMON FULLER... THE PRODUCER OF THE SHOW... WHO ALSO DISCOVERED THE SPICE GIRLS... AND I THINK BECAUSE OF HER ASSOCIATION WITH DAVID BECKHAM, THOUGHT WOULD BE A BIG DRAW FOR THE PUBLIC.

One thing you have to understand about Americans is that they love a winner, as far as they are concerned there are no prizes for 2nd place and Victoria Beckham has done nothing to earn her celeb status. She was a Spice Girl who never sang she just stood on stage pouting, she tried going solo and my friend worked in the studio with Dane Bowers and said her voice was mixed in with another girl's to make it sound better because she was that bad (hence why she won't ever sing live. The she tried being a WAG and she didn't like just being Mrs David Beckham, now she's reinvented herself as a Fashion Designer despite never sewing in her life! What is it with this country and supporting every talentless no hoper that comes into the limelight, stop watching X Factor and go out on a Saturday night and see a proper band or a live singer or a stand-up comedian.
Comment by Fabienne on January 14 13:15

Well..she cant do anything right apparently but her designs will be around for awhile and are more captivating than usual gumph in shops and more classic..and I guess she will change them to suit the times and seasons..
Yep shes thin..she will never learn..but in the end it will catch up with her..what a shame
Comment by anon on January 14 13:29

Well said Fabienne! I think you hit the nail on the head!
Comment by Josie on January 14 13:40

She's surprised they say she looks gaunt? If she wasn't married to Mr B, she'd have been booked into a clinic for a serious eating disorder...she looks like a walking skeleton. If she blew over in a high wind, she'd snap. What's fashionable about that? It seems that it's not ok for models to be uberthin, but the media lets her get away with looking like a walking lollipop!
Comment by Fluffy on January 14 14:13

I agree with media comments she does look terrable, dont know why she would be picked to be a judge on this show since she cant sing herself how would she know a good singer with potential, her comments on the show clearly demonstrate thiS !!!!
Comment by lizzie on January 14 14:59

Maybe VB could be OK judge for a fashion competition but not singing one for sure!
All her comments were about contestants appearance, style, clothes and very little or nothing about a singing ability!
Plus there is nothing appealing in her for American public, she sits like a statue and wears clothes and make-up that would be more appropriate on Red Carpet or VIP party. Take that Red dress, hair band and a heavy make-up...OMG what she was thinking!
Comment by angy on January 14 16:52

gotta say i agree!!!sorry but she really did look like a skeleton
Comment by winter1990 on January 14 20:35

I like Victoria, yes shes very thin but so what, its her body. I think she is witty and fun, and was probably too good for the show anyway.
Comment by Cath on January 15 09:38

wonder what wit and personality some of these comments are talking about, and that's said with all due respect. and we do 'get it'. we're not stupid in america you know. posh was scarcely posh. she looked gaunt and ghostly, and brought absolutely nothing to the show. wit and personality??? forget it.
Comment by stella peterson on January 16 19:35

I thought Victoria whilst not the best of judges did a very credible job. She was judging the whole packsge, stage presence, image as well as the singing.
She was certainly a much better judge than the acclaimed Miss Mary J Blige. For all her singing fame she did nothing more than laugh at most of the acts and whilst some of them were quite ridiculous she showed nothing but disrespect for those nervous contestants. Has she forgotten how she started out and does she not remember being booed off the stage at Wembely the first time she appeared here in the UK. She should show more humility!!
I have always been a fan of MJ but have totally lost respect for her now. Victoria Beckham was hugely better than her and should feel proud of the job she did.
Comment by Denise March-Palmer on January 17 10:57

I thought her comments were OK and its a shame the Yanks don't "get" her dry sense of humour but her appearance Oh dear. I haven't seen her for a while and I was really shocked. That large head on top of a skeletal body. I have to say she definitely looks anorexic and I even wondered if that strange hairband she was wearing was to hide a resulting hair loss. I can't believe she eats when she goes out or if she does she must be bulimic. And the six inches of panstick she looked more like a haggard 55.
