Golden Globe nominations announced

The nominations for Hollywood's Golden Globes are in - and it's a strong year for the British in Tinseltown.

It's been a particularly successful time for British ladies, with three Brits featuring among the five nominees up for Best Actress in a Drama: Dame Helen Mirren (for The Last Station), Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), and newcomer Carey Mulligan (An Education), are all in the frame. Standing between Blighty and a big shiny trophy in that category are Sandra Bullock (who is also nominated for Best Musical or Comedy Actress, alongside Meryl Streep) and Precious newcomer Gabourney Sidibe.

Over in the men's drama category, it's down to Colin Firth to do his bit for Britain - but he has tough competition in the shape of Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in the epic Invictus. George Clooney's also got a chance for Up In The Air. That's a film that could do no wrong with the judging panel, scooping four nominations including Best Film - Drama, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

While Up In The Air is riding high, Disney Pixar's Up is mostly absent from the shortlist, with just Best Animation and Original Score recognition. It can be hard to convince the panel on cartoons sometimes - but they do like a good musical, and Nine - whose stellar ensemble cast helped scoop five nominations, looks set to do the business in awards season.

Other favourite films this year include Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, which gets four nods including Best Screenplay, and Avatar, which also garnered a quartet of nominations. The most expensive film of all time is up for Best Film and Best Director for its ex-Titanic helmsman James Cameron.

Film critics like to look past the obvious choices for other gems which you may have otherwise missed. If their recommendations are anything to go by, you should look out for The Hurt Locker, hailed as ‘the first great film about the Iraq War' and Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire. Both have three nominations each.
