Audience raves about Keira Knightley's stage debut
By Eleanor Young on Wednesday 9 December 2009
Hollywood starlet Keira Knightley got a big thumbs up for her debut stage performance in a new production of The Misanthrope yesterday.
The show doesn't officially open until next week, but an 800-strong audience was invited to see it early.
Critics have yet to review the play, but if audience reaction is anything to go by, we can definitely expect something good.
‘You never know what you are going to get when you go to a play starring a big movie star,' said one theatre buff.
‘Theatre is so different and sometimes they get it wrong, but Keira was expressive and I think she really worked in the role.'
‘People have obviously said before the performance that she would not do very well. Clearly she can handle all that pressure, and did a really good job on the night.'
The production, Keira's first on-stage performance, took a staggering £1 million in ticket sales, in the first four days of box-office sales. Go Keira!
And the star has revealed she only signed up for the play because it made her laugh.
‘It made me giggle. That really was it. I've been sent things that were very serious, and then I read this and thought, ‘How lovely, that really might be fun,' she said in a recent interview.
‘I'd just been to see quite a few tragedies in the theatre. You get that numb-bum feeling, and I thought, ‘Ooh, I don't want to be part of a numb-bum show'.

Keira is just the latest in a string of stars to head off the screen and onto the stage. Sienna Miller, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Rachel Weisz have all recently been treading the boards.

I can't wait to see this.... although sure I'll never get tickets now. Love the trend that's bringing all the stars back to the stage - proves they can act, afterall.

I wasn't that bothered before, but actually, I now really want to see how good (or bad) she really is!

It's great to hear she's doing well on stage. She's been doing good work in film and obviously she is a good performer. I wish I could see her onstage, but I'm too far away.
