Cheryl Cole's single is number one
By Sarah Karmali on Monday 26 October 2009
And she's done it. Cheryl Cole has shot to number one in the charts with the fastest-selling single of the year.
Her debut solo track, Fight for This Love, sold a whopping 292,846 copies in its first week of release - and knocked her former protégée, Alexandra Burke, off the top spot.
Alex's single Bad Boys went in at number one last weekend, and is now the second fastest selling single of the year, after Cheryl's.
But it hasn't all been plain sailing this past week for the Girls Aloud starlet.
Cheryl had the nation divided following her hugely anticipated performance on the X Factor, which despite drawing in the highest audience figures in the show's history, received mixed reviews from fans and critics - thanks to her half-live, half-mimed vocals.
Then, she came under fire once again, following suggestions that the single was a rip-off of the song Lil' Star by R&B singer Kelis - which of course she strongly denied.
But it certainly didn't have a negative impact on her sales.
'I'm just getting over the fact I have recorded my solo record, and now it's number one,' the 26-year-old said yesterday.
'I can't take this all in. It's hard for me to put into words how I feel. I have this permanent smile on my face.'
We were never in doubt that she'd scoop the number one spot. Well done, Cheryl!
Cheryl's debut solo album, Three Little Words, goes on sale today.

I think she is totally amazing, she's earned that number one spot!
No she's not the strongest singer but she's proved she has personality, which is hard to come by these days.

Cheryl seems like a nice girl and she is very pretty but she doesn't have a great singing voice and her dress sense very average. She is alright and I like her but there's no way she deserves to be 'Britain's Sweetheart' when there are so many more worthy artists out there with so much more about them. Shouldn't we shout about people who are special and offer something unique NOT mediocrity.

I bought her single and helped her get there! It's a super catchy song and she's a lovely girl. Well deserved I say. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Overrated in every way, and her rise to fame has been very cleverly manipulated by the people around her, but I am sure she'll has a very succesful future ahead of her, it seems everything she touches turns to gold at the moment, just don't get it myself...

well done cheryl. i think shes done a fantastic job. she deserves all the praise and credit as she has worked very hard. success doesnt just land on your lap, it has to be worked towards and is hard graft in any job. she is a young woman at the top of her game. she should be commended not slated. a true inspiration to young girls in this country.i for one support her career.
