How to get into ...

Nervous Cheryl to mime on X-Factor

By Louise O'Connell  on Wednesday 14 October 2009

Cheryl Cole - The X Factor - Celebrity News - Marie Claire

X-Factor bosses have insisted that Cheryl Cole's new solo single, Fight For This Love, will have to be pre-recorded in front of the studio audience because she won't have time between being a judge and standing up on stage to perform.

Cheryl has been reported as saying that nerves about singing live on the X-Factor have really got to her. Speaking to BBC Radio 1 she said, 'I'm absolutely terrified. The nerves started weeks ago. I love performing but I've sat for weeks judging people, months, and then I'm putting myself out there to be judged and it's a weird feeling.'

In the last series of X-Factor when Cheryl performed with Girls Aloud - whose performance was also pre-recorded - Simon Cowell said, 'It was a little pitchy but you looked good.' We wonder what he'll say after Cheryl's performance this Saturday...

I think it is very hipocritical to stand on the X factor stage and mime.

Britney Spears was a disaster and just showed that without the expensive videos and make up artists, she simply was not that great a singer!!

The contestants have to sing live, and dance etc. Why is there not enough time between judging and singing to allow her to sing live?

Can she not sing to close the show? Is it imperative that she get changed straight after?

If she wants to proove herself as a solo artist then she need to show the public what she is made of.

ANYONE CAN SING ON A RECORD WITH EDITORS, PRODUCERS, ECHO MACHINES, SOUND TECHNICIANS ETC WHO CAN MAKE ANYONE SOUND LIKE A POP STAR!!
Comment by Hayley on October 14 10:06

Totally agree. She earns money from singing, and yet won't sing live? Lame excuse. Maybe it's just because Cheryl really can't sing to save herself. Kind of like Posh Spice really.
Comment by Fiona on October 14 12:33

Hayley - I totally agree!!

She honestly expects to sit there and judge people on singing live, and then stand up and mime? It's a complete mockery!

If she isn't going to prove that she can do what she she is judging others for - then don't bother.
Comment by Layla on October 14 12:36

She cannot sing, even when miming! Her new single is awful and she looks cheap in the video. I don't know how Cheryl Cole has become so successful, as she is just a talentless chav made good.
Comment by Isobel on October 14 12:47

i completely agree with Hayley! She should sing live, or not sing at all..
Comment by Kate on October 14 12:53

This is unbelievable, she expects her group to sing live and dance but she doesn't want to do it because of nerves, how does she think the contestants feel. As for change from something she is wearing to judge and something else to perform, what is that all about, surely the performance is whats important not what you are wearing, hopefully something more appropriate than the christmas fairy dress that she had on last Saturday.
Comment by Janet de Vries on October 14 12:56

If someone refuses to lead by example, how can they expect to be respected as a judge?

This is laughable.

Will someone pull her puppet strings when she pretends to dance?

Diabolical.

A talent contest judged by a complete and utter moron - who can't even sing.

Great Britain - my backside.

Somebody vote her off - please!!!
Comment by Sharon on October 14 13:07

Am I missing something? The story as reported is that the performance will be recorded in front of the audience & replayed during the show for timing issues, not that she will be miming. I see nothing to suggest she won't be singing 'live' at the time of the performance being recorded. That seems reasonable to me. If she were miming, I would think that a bit shoddy under the circumstances of a live singing competition of which she is judge & mentor, it would be better not to use the show to promote her single than mime.
Comment by lisah on October 14 13:11

I totally agree with everyone!!
Sing live or not at all. Look at Alexandra Burke last week - she mimed too. Thank goodness for Robbie!
Comment by Rachel on October 14 13:27

how pathetic that everyone else has to sing live but she cant. She is obviously afraid that all of the contestants will be better than her!!
Comment by SS on October 14 13:48

I do agree with all the comments that Cheryl should sing live as she is a judge on a show where all the contestants have to sing live. However, it should be remembered that Cheryl herself won her place in Girls Aloud through singing live on Pop Stars The Rivals, so it is perhaps a little unfair to say that she can't sing.
Comment by Mandy on October 14 14:02

I cannot believe she has the gall to not sing live on a national tv song contest.
Talk about not leading by example, more than likely terrified at the fact that Whitney Houston will be singing.

Simon Cowell is being a hyprocrite by letting this happen..very disappointed with xfactor
Comment by Lorna on October 14 14:24

Pre-recorded does NOT mean she will be miming, it just means she will sing to the studio audience before the live show instead of during the show. Then it will be shown during the programme for the viewers at home.
Don't judge her performance before you've seen it please!
Comment by Sophie on October 14 14:27

I'm annoyed by that comment saying Alexandra didn't sing live as she clearly did!
It's credit to her that you didn't realize the difference! Yes she had her backing track on in the background which you would have heard when she improvised toward the end but she did the whole performance live.
For Cheryl the 'not having enough time as she is judging' is just an excuse because they only need to be in their seats right at the end of the show when the results are read out... Excuses excuses!
Comment by Nina on October 14 14:28

It's not unfair to say that she can't sing - it's truthful.

You obviously haven't heard the new solo single. I thought it was stuck on the word 'fight' and this was spoken rather than sang. There was no range to her voice and it sounded rather flat.

The video didn't do any justice for her either, with the negligee down round her ankles (somebody could have at least told her to pull her trousers up) and jumping about (those puppet strings again) in leopard print pyjamas.
Comment by Sharon on October 14 15:07

I think its ridiculous the Cheryl sits and judges inexperienced people who are told if you want to win X Factor you have to overcome your nerves we cant make allowances for nerves and then one of the very same experienced judges is going to mime because shes too nervous!! Im sorry but it stinks!
Comment by Dawn on October 14 15:33

i agree with everyone, what is the point in doing a performance when its all mimed, it shows the public that they cant sing and havnt even tried, i would rater see her try to sing live than not at all even if she is crap or just dont sing at all . the contestants are better singers than her they are nervous too but they get up and have the courage and shes supposed 2 be proffessional. basically try to sing live or dont sing at all !!!
Comment by jade on October 14 15:37

it is unbelievable that she is not going to sing live on a show where she is judging live peformances. I really can't believe it. I like her and feel disappointed. You're letting yourself down Cheryl, you won a talent show, show us your talent! Don't worry about Simon, he seems to adore you.
Comment by Nikki on October 14 15:48

"X-Factor bosses have insisted...". Yes, she said on a radio 1 show that she's nervous but she didn't say that she won't be singing live. From what I read from this and other articles is that it's not really her decision and it's because of the limited time. And she is singing live a lot so i just don't think that it's because of her voice.
Comment by Marta on October 14 16:10

Never mind the X Factor, what about the Credibility Factor??

Cheryl must sing live or not at all.
Comment by Rebecca on October 14 16:13

Her performance will be pre-recorded for valid reasons but it does not say that this will be mimed. Give Cheryl a break.
Comment by Heather on October 14 16:42

Pathetic. No offence, but I never did undertand what great expertise qualified Cheryl as a judge.
Comment by Sarah on October 14 17:53

None of the acts on X-Factor should be allowed to mime, when the contestants have to sing live every week. Particularly a judge who was chosen because she's "been through it herself"... What a sell-out.
Comment by jacey on October 14 21:20

I am not surprised she is nervous and doesn't want to sing live. When asked to comment on her performance last year with Girl's Aloud, Simon Cowell said that it was 'a little bit pitchy'. He was absolutely right and looked embarrassed to be saying it. Yet she said the twins can't sing!!!! After that cruel comment she lost my sympathy. The boys had the hardest choreography of the night- jumping around the stage does affect your singing.
Comment by Bron on October 14 22:49

Fair enough on your opinions but at least the producers arnt trying to put it out there that Cheryl will be singing completely live.

She might not be the best singer in the world but i guess being part of Girls Aloud and winning a Brit award and more than 20 top 10 singles prove shes rubbish doesnt it?

Sure people say that Nadine has the voice (which she does) of the band but Girls Aloud without any of the girls wouldnt be the same.

So before everyone starts voicing their opinions maybe you should think that this Geordie lass has provided young girls with someone to look up to, because half of the kids these days (me included) need someone like her to relate to.

And to be honest do you really think you haters are gonna knock her down?

Comment by Shannon on October 15 00:39

Any person can mime but only a few can sing and she is taking the wages for doing nothing. It is obscene that she is not "singing" on a talent show, what is she afraid of? the new people will outshine her?No excuses sing or do not mime as this is cheating in my book.
Comment by Barbara Purdy on October 15 13:17

Firstly, Alexandra did sing live. She had an accompanying backing track playing for her improvisations. Alex is an amazing singer so why anyone thinks that she would have to mime is beyond me.

This whole thing about Cheryl's performance having to be pre-recorded is a complete cover -up for the fact that she CAN'T sing. Yes, she won a talent contest, but people are forgetting that that was 7 years ago and the standards have (thank goodness) dramatically increased since then.
Her performance last year on the X Factor was diabolical to say the least.
Ironically, I do actually like Cheryl, I think she's a genuinely nice person but she shouldn't have pursued a solo career as she knows herself that she is not a strong singer.
I don't think a judge needs to be able to sing to judge; I'm sure Simon Cowell isn't the best singer but he knows how to criticise professionally.
Anybody, regardless of who they are, should sing live on the X Factor as the contestants do. All Sunday is going to do is highlight just how terrible a singer Cheryl is......
Oh, and apparantly the pre-recording of her performance took 2 hours because she couldn't hit the notes......great talent.....
Comment by Laura on October 16 18:52

Alex Burke did the same last week using a prerecorded mime track. I think that is worse as she won last year due to her singing voice and comes back and mimes a year later
Comment by dick on October 18 19:03

I completely understand where you're all coming from however, she's not the one who has to win the competition. She just doesn't want Simon to say anything mean, for no reason. If she isn't a contenstant. He made her cry yesterday so we can only imagine what she'll feel like after his comments.
Comment by Mafalda on October 18 19:46

she was rubbish
Comment by bunny on October 18 23:43

Britney Spears mimed and i don't think why cheryl would want to do it. Probbaly next time she would shave her hair off aswell as Britney Spears And Britney Spears was not a good singer
Comment by Nicola on February 17 18:28
