Britain's top TV talent got their gladrags on last night for the Bafta Television Awards – but some big stars left with nothing but compliments on how smart they looked.

Controversial chat show host Jonathan Ross left empty-handed after losing out to Harry Hill in the Best Entertainment Performance category.

Five-times nominated Ross was in the running with his Friday Night chat show, but it was Harry Hill's TV burp that won, earning the comic his third Bafta.

Hill said: 'I never thought I'd get three Baftas for a clip show. Ridiculous.'

While Jonathan Ross revealed he'd become more grateful for his job after his three-month suspension over prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs.

Other big winners of the night included Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, who picked up Best Comedy Programme for Harry and Paul.

Funnyman Whitehouse congratulated Enfield on winning his first Bafta – ten years after the Loadsamoney star lost out to his comedy partner.

Enfield joked: 'This time I made sure he was in the show so I might at least get a touch of it, too.'

Kenneth Brannagh said it was 'bloody fantastic' to pick up his first TV Bafta for his role as a Swedish detective in Wallander. He won a film Bafta twenty years ago for his role in Henry V.

Meanwhile, David Attenborough thanked 'spitting cobras, axelotls, golden frogs, dwarf chameleons, and those happy tortoises,' for helping Life in Cold Blood snap up Best Specialist Factual Show, and Jennifer Saunders said receiving a joint Academy Fellowship with long-term comedy partner Dawn French was 'like the cherry on the icing on the cake.'

The bash was hosted by Graham Norton and held at London's Royal Festival Hall.
