Madonna's new plea for Mercy
By Ruth Doherty on Tuesday 21 April 2009
Madonna will resume her battle to adopt four-year-old Malawian Mercy James in two weeks' time.
The Queen of Pop's appeal against a ruling stopping her from taking the little girl back to New York will be heard on 4 May.
Madge herself will not be required to attend the appeal, which could last for two weeks.
The 50-year-old was left devastated when a Malawian judge rejected her adoption bid because she had not met the proviso that adoptive parents-to-be need to be a Malawian resident for 18-24 months before securing the application.
The star did not have to meet the specification when she adopted David Banda from the African country in 2006, leaving Madonna feeling bewildered – and other critics suggesting she had been given special consideration because of her star status.
